GIS Technician Internship


At Colorado Springs Utilities, the work of a GIS Technician offers a unique opportunity for college students to learn about the application of GIS as it relates to linear assets. The many learning experiences acquired within the water/wastewater datasets offer a well-balanced introduction into our industry and offer more insight into our business. While this internship will focus on the wet utilities for data translation, other service lines may be explored as time permits.

A GIS Technician internship offers the following learning opportunities:

  • of ESRI’s GIS products and how we apply those principles at Colorado Springs Utilities in reference to our unique water and wastewater systems and challenges
  • The programs and best practices of water construction, as it relates to documentation and how we translate the data for use by the business
  • Exposure to program management skills (tools, follow-through, reporting, etc.) to ensure careful processes and standards are adhered to for these programs of work
  • General editing practices used by our teams in order to accurately capture infrastructure in our enterprise database
  • Opportunities according to aptitude and enthusiasm to explore further education and experience in other linear datasets and process and procedure documentation

In this position the GIS Technician will:

  • Assist with data management, mapping, and some analysis projects, utilizing ArcGIS software and related tools
  • Learn and help tenured staff complete and review water/wastewater data
  • Catalog authoritative documents in our enterprise documentation management system eB
  • Review current standards for data translation and offer insight into improvement opportunities.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS/WORKING CONDITIONS
- Exerts up to 10 lbs. of force occasionally and/or small amount of force frequently to lift, carry, push, pull, or otherwise move objects, including the human body. Sedentary work involves sitting most of the time but may involve walking or standing for brief periods of time. Jobs are sedentary if walking and standing are required only occasionally, and all other sedentary criteria are met.
- Positions in this class typically require talking, hearing, seeing and repetitive motions within an office working environment.

Who You Are...ideally this intern will be working towards a degree in GIS or Geography, or closely related degrees. We are seeking those with an interest in gaining knowledge and experience with ESRI’s GIS products and how we apply those principles at Colorado Springs Utilities in reference to our unique water systems and challenges. Additionally, someone with a keen attention to detail and process documentation.

**This internship is full-time, 40 hours/week during the summer months, and 10-20 hours per week during the school year, schedule can be coordinate with students' schedule and school workload.
**This is an on-site, non-remote/non-telecommuting position
*Hourly rate is dependent on year completed of academic degree, e.g., second year complete, third year complete, etc.
*Candidates MUST be enrolled in a degree seeking program (Associates/Bachelors/Masters) and be able to provide documentation if requested. Enrollment in a certification program does not qualify.
