Summary

Under general supervision, performs technical GIS work to develop, maintain, and improve the Town’s geographic information resources. Creates and maintains GIS data; performs quality assurance and quality control; produces maps and other cartographic products; researches and integrates data; and provides support for GIS applications and workflows. Collaborates with Town departments to provide accurate geographic information that supports municipal operations, planning, and decision-making.

Examples of Duties

  • Create, edit, maintain, and quality-check GIS data, databases, feature classes, and map layers.
  • Interpret and incorporate information from plats, deeds, legal descriptions, engineering plans, as-built drawings, and other source materials into GIS.
  • Develop clear, accurate, and useful maps and other GIS products for internal and external customers.
  • Research, analyze, and integrate GIS and related data from a variety of sources.
  • Support GIS data collection, verification, and maintenance in office and field environments as needed.
  • Assist with web-based and enterprise GIS resources, including maps, applications, and data services.
  • Respond to GIS questions and service requests by helping users find, understand, and use geographic information.
  • Work with Town departments to understand business needs and identify practical GIS solutions.
  • Perform data quality assurance and quality control and help maintain standards for accuracy, consistency, and usability.
  • Create and maintain documentation, metadata, procedures, and other resources that support reliable GIS operations.
  • Assist with GIS-related projects, process improvements, automation, technology evaluations, and other initiatives as assigned.
  • Stay current with GIS technologies, methods, and practices and share knowledge with teammates and customers.

Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications

  • High school diploma or GED.
  • Minimum of 1 year of education, training, certification, or experience in GIS, geography, planning, information technology, or a related field sufficient to perform the essential functions of the position.
  • Minimum of 1 year of hands on experience using GIS software and working with geographic data, mapping, or related technology.
  • Ability to communicate effectively, provide quality customer service, and work collaboratively with others.
  • Valid Texas driver’s license and driving record in compliance with Town policy.

Supplemental information

Desired Qualifications

  • Associate’s degree or higher in GIS, geography, planning, computer science, information technology, or a related field.
  • Two years of progressively responsible experience in ArcPro/ArcGIS Online.
  • Experience with Esri ArcGIS Pro and/or ArcGIS Online.
  • Experience with ArcGIS Enterprise or other enterprise GIS environments.
  • Experience working with municipal, utility, infrastructure, property, addressing, or public works GIS data.
  • Experience interpreting plats, deeds, legal descriptions, engineering plans, or as-built drawings.
  • Experience with GIS field data collection, GPS, databases, CAD, or asset management systems.
  • Experience with GIS data quality assurance/quality control, documentation, or workflow improvement.

Knowledge/ Skills / Abilities

  • Working knowledge of GIS concepts, spatial data, cartography, and data management practices.
  • Ability to accurately edit, analyze, organize, and maintain GIS data.
  • Ability to interpret technical source documents and translate information into GIS.
  • Ability to troubleshoot problems, research solutions, and learn new technologies.
  • Strong attention to detail and commitment to data accuracy and quality.
  • Ability to communicate technical information clearly to both GIS and non-GIS users.
  • Ability to organize work, manage competing priorities, and complete assignments independently and as part of a team.
  • Willingness to occasionally work outside normal business hours or in the field when operational needs require.
