This is a technical position with responsibility for supporting computerized geographic information systems and designing, developing and maintaining GIS applications within user departments. General supervision is received from higher level staff. Related work is performed as required.

This is a Competitive Class position. The individual selected to fill this vacancy will be given a provisional appointment and will be required to participate in the next Civil Service Examination for this title.

A qualified applicant may be provisionally appointed and serve in the position until a Civil Service Examination is administered and an appropriate eligible list can be established to make a permanent appointment in accordance with the Civil Service Rule of Three. CITY RESIDENCY WILL BE REQUIRED WITHIN ONE YEAR OF HIRE.

Examples of duties

  • Uses CADD to create maps and engineering drawings;
  • Integrates CADD into GIS projects and programs and GIS into CADD projects and programs;
  • Integrates GPS and Pictometry images with GIS programs;
  • Writes programs in ARCVIEW, ARCGIS and ARCINFO to create customized reports, user menus, etc.;
  • Suggests changes to CADD software to personnel at the software supplier;
  • Produces drawings and calculations for borrow and fill, erosion control, and wetlands projects;
  • Produces video footage to be used in presentations;
  • Creates GIS mapping files from existing databases;
  • Creates maps for various Engineering projects;
  • Creates inventory and condition reports for engineering analysis;
  • Composes training and instructional materials for CADD users;
  • Develop methods for the expansion of the GIS system;
  • Assists Engineers in the development of projects to analyze existing infrastructure.

Qualifications

High School Diploma or G.E.D; AND
I. Associate's degree in Survey Technology, Geography, Civil Engineering Technology or a closely related field AND two (2) years' experience developing applications for a geographic information system.
OR
II. Associate's degree in Computer Science or a closely related field AND three (3) years' experience developing applications for a geographic information system.
