The Comanche Nation Gift Shop Manager is responsible for the full operation, marketing, and financial performance of the Gift Shop. This position requires advanced retail knowledge, including merchandising, inventory control, pricing strategy, marketing, and competitive analysis. The Manager ensures that Comanche Nation merchandise—such as beads, fringe, fabric, and other cultural items—is competitively priced and effectively marketed in comparison to similar gift shops throughout the State of Oklahoma, while maintaining cultural integrity and quality standards.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Greet customers in a professional, respectful, and courteous manner
- Manage daily retail operations, including opening and closing procedures
- Drive sales growth through strategic merchandising, pricing, promotions, and customer engagement
- Conduct regular price comparisons and market research with other Oklahoma gift shops and cultural retailers selling beads, fringe, fabric, and related items
- Develop and adjust pricing strategies to remain competitive while maintaining profitability
- Plan and execute marketing and promotional initiatives, including in-store promotions, seasonal campaigns, cultural events, and collaborations
- Coordinate marketing efforts with Comanche Nation departments, social media platforms, websites, and event calendars
- Oversee inventory management, including purchasing, receiving, tracking, reconciliation, and shrink prevention
- Maintain accurate POS operations, cash handling, deposits, and sales reporting
- Analyze sales data, inventory turnover, and pricing performance; prepare regular reports for leadership
- Prepare and maintain monthly, quarterly, and annual retail reports, including sales summaries, inventory reports, and performance metrics
- Produce and understand Profit and Loss (P&L) statements, including revenue, cost of goods sold, operating expenses, and net profit
- Track and report key retail statistics on a minimum monthly basis, such as:
- Total sales and revenue trends
- Inventory turnover and shrinkage
- Gross margin and pricing performance
- Top-selling and underperforming products
- Provide written and verbal reports to leadership detailing financial performance, sales trends, pricing adjustments, and marketing effectiveness
- Maintain accurate documentation to support audits, internal reviews, and financial oversight
- Coordinate with Finance to ensure sales data, deposits, and reports align with Comanche Nation accounting procedures
- Create visually appealing displays aligned with cultural significance, seasonal trends, and customer demand
- Maintain professional relationships with vendors, artists, and suppliers
- Ensure compliance with Comanche Nation financial controls, policies, and procedures
- Maintain a clean, organized, and welcoming retail environment
- Perform other related duties as assigned by Tribal Administrator.
SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES AND REPORTING
- Employee has direct supervisory authority of all department personnel.
- Supervise Gift Shop staff, including scheduling, training, and daily task assignments
- Train staff in sales techniques, customer service, cultural awareness, and product knowledge
- Ensure staff accountability for cash handling, inventory accuracy, and customer service standards
- Conduct or contribute to staff performance evaluations
- Report sales performance, inventory levels, pricing adjustments, and marketing activities to the Department Director
- Coordinate with Finance, Administration, and Cultural Programs as needed
- Employee reports directly to the Tribal Administrator.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS
- Ability to stand and walk for extended periods
- Ability to lift and move merchandise weighing up to 40 pounds
- Frequent bending, reaching, stocking, and handling of merchandise
- Manual dexterity for POS systems and product handling
WORK ENVIRONMENT
- Standard office environment with occasional travel for meetings, trainings, and conferences.
- Retail environment with continuous interaction with the public
- Fast-paced atmosphere during peak seasons and cultural events
- Indoor environment with occasional exposure to dust, packaging materials, and temperature changes
- Noise levels consistent with public retail operations
Qualifications
Required Qualifications:
- High School diploma or GED Required
- Minimum of 5–8 years of professional retail experience, including sales, inventory, and merchandising
- Demonstrated experience in pricing strategy, competitive price comparison, and retail marketing
- Proven ability to analyze sales data and market trends to make pricing and inventory decisions
- Experience working with POS systems, inventory software, and basic accounting practices
- Strong leadership, communication, and customer service skills
- Ability to operate independently and make sound business decisions
Preferred
Qualifications:
- Associate’s or Bachelor’s degree in Business Administration, Marketing, Retail Management, Entrepreneurship, or a related field.
- Coursework or training in sales, merchandising, inventory management, or marketing strategy
- Supervisory experience required.
- Retail management or supervisory experience
- Experience in cultural retail, artisan markets, museums, or tourism-focused gift shops
- Knowledge of Indigenous arts, beadwork, textiles, and cultural merchandise
- Experience working within a Tribal government
