Job Description

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Demonstration of understanding of decontamination, high level disinfection and sterilization principles required.
  • A minimum of 1 yr experience in endoscopic scope processing and endoscopic procedural assistance required.
  • Minimum of 2 years experience in central sterile processing functions and operation of sterile processing equipment (ultrasonic washer, washer/disinfector, Sterrad, autoclave) preferred.
  • Constant and frequent judgment and response required.
  • English language skills and communication required.
  • SPD certification required or in progress.
  • High School Diploma or equivalent.
  • Current Certification in Basic Life Support (BLS) at time of hire.

OCCUPATIONAL EXPOSURE

  • Category I exposure to bloodborne pathogens, frequent exposure to chemical hazards and may encounter radiation hazards.

RESPONSIBILITES:

  • Sets up and Assists physician during performance of the endoscopic procedure.
  • Attends to the cleaning, high level disinfection, and maintenance of endoscopes and related equipment.
  • Preforms required quality assurance testing per manufacturer instructions and maintains accurate documentation logs.
  • Confirms completion of endoscope processing prior to use of scope.
  • Keeps disinfectant solutions up to date.
  • Adheres to sterilization process policies and procedures.
  • Cleans each item according to manufacturer's instructions.
  • Inspects instruments under lighted magnification for damage and defects; lubricates items as required per manufacturer instructions for use.
  • Determines that each item is in good working condition prior to processing.
  • Sorts and arranges items into proper trays according to established policy and procedures.
  • Accurately labels each item with name of tray and other required identifying information.
  • Correctly operates sterilizers, ultrasonic washer, washer disinfector, endoscopic reprocessor, and other equipment for processing items.
  • Positions items correctly in endoscopic reprocessor, washer disinfector, and/or sterilizer and selects proper cycle; seeks assistance when needed.
  • Checks quality indicators for proper functioning of equipment prior to use.
  • Preforms required biological monitoring tests on all sterilizers according to established policy and procedures.
  • Maintains availability of supplies for continuity or recording throughout sterilization process.
  • Cleans sterilizers according to established policies and procedures.
  • Maintains inventory levels and accurate records.
  • Checks for outdated items and package integrity of wrapped sterilized items; replaces items as necessary.
  • Places items in correct location.
  • Maintains adequate inventory of supplies for the sterile processing area.
  • Maintains and updates the instrument tray inventory list as needed.
  • Reviews current information regarding routine preference cards as needed.
  • Maintains work area in a neat orderly manner.
  • Provides age and culturally appropriate care.
  • Communicate relevant information to Nurse Manger, Physician and staff to maintain continuity of care.
  • Orients and mentors new staff members.
  • Follows standard precautions using personal protective equipment as required

  • The employee must be able to life and/or carry over 25 pounds on a regular basis and be able to push/pull over 25 pounds on a regular basis.
  • The employee must be able to stand and/or walk at least five hours per day.
