Geotechnical Engineer – Whangārei, Northland

We have an opportunity for a Geotechnical Engineer in our WSP Whangarei office.

In this role, you will provide Project Management and Geotechnical Engineering Support in providing

asset and operational management, design and construction on projects primarily for

Road, Water, Building and Structures sectors.

What You’ll Do

  • Lead and deliver geotechnical inputs across local and regional projects, coordinating effectively with other disciplines.
  • Undertake and/or oversee investigations, design (including slope stability, foundations, and retaining structures), and prepare high‑quality technical reports.
  • Produce contract documentation, support construction monitoring, and maintain local geotechnical data, standards, and procedures.
  • Ensure all work meets technical standards and quality assurance requirements while contributing to ongoing technical development within the team.
  • Prepare fee estimates, methodologies, schedules, and project documentation.
  • Monitor and report on progress, risks, budgets, and programmes, resolving issues proactively.
  • Build strong client relationships and contribute to proposals, bids, and business development activities.
  • Mentor and support junior engineers, fostering technical growth and a collaborative team culture.
  • Work with local and national teams to strengthen capability and drive continuous improvement.

About you

  • Bachelor of Engineering or Master of Engineering in Geotechnical Engineering.
  • 8+ years of professional geotechnical engineering experience, including experience within an engineering consultancy.
  • Experience with New Zealand design codes and standards.
  • Full, clean driver’s license.
  • Ability to engage effectively with clients, build trusted relationships, and contribute to business development, project planning and delivery.
  • A proactive, resilient, and solutions‑focused approach, with the motivation to influence outcomes and support high‑performing teams.

This position is full time, 40 hours and 5 days per week.

The remuneration range for this position is $112,000 - $122,000 per annum, depending on experience.
