Job Description

As a Geomatics Technologist, you’ll play a key role in bringing municipal infrastructure projects to life—helping ensure everything is built accurately, efficiently, and exactly where it’s meant to be.

In this dynamic role, you’ll combine hands-on fieldwork with advanced digital modeling to support the full lifecycle of engineering and construction projects. From collecting precise survey data on-site to transforming that information into detailed digital models, your work will directly influence how projects are designed, coordinated, and constructed. Leveraging industry-leading tools such as Leica survey equipment and Autodesk Civil 3D, you’ll gather and process field data, build and maintain project models, validate design information, and provide critical layout support to construction teams.

Your expertise will help ensure that digital models align with real-world conditions, supporting seamless integration between design and construction. Whether you're troubleshooting discrepancies, refining datasets, or preparing model-ready files, you’ll play an essential role in maintaining accuracy and quality at every stage. This role calls for a strong foundation in geomatics, along with the ability to adapt digital workflows to meet project needs, think critically in the field, and collaborate effectively with engineers, project managers, contractors, and other stakeholders.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Conduct topographic and engineering surveys, collecting accurate field data using a variety of survey methods and equipment to support design, construction, and asset management activities
  • Establish survey control, confirm project requirements, and ensure data integrity through detailed field notes, site documentation, and adherence to safety protocols
  • Process and transform field data into accurate, model-ready datasets using Leica workflows, Autodesk Civil 3D, and related platforms
  • Develop and maintain digital models, including surfaces, alignments, corridors, and grading elements, ensuring compliance with organizational standards
  • Perform quality assurance and quality control (QA/QC) checks to validate data accuracy and resolve discrepancies between design models and field conditions
  • Provide construction layout and staking services, translating design models into precise on-site measurements that meet required tolerances
  • Review and validate design models prior to construction, identifying and addressing conflicts between plans and real-world conditions
  • Monitor and document layout variances, troubleshoot issues, and escalate complex discrepancies to ensure project timelines and accuracy are maintained
  • Select and apply appropriate survey equipment, methods, and digital workflows based on project needs, environmental conditions, and accuracy requirements
  • Adapt to changing site conditions, design updates, and project requirements while maintaining a focus on safety, precision, and efficiency
  • Collaborate with engineers, project managers, contractors, and field personnel to support project coordination, data integration, and construction activities
  • Provide guidance and oversight to seasonal staff, ensuring quality work, adherence to safety standards, and proper use of survey equipment and workflows

Qualifications and Skills:

  • Diploma in Civil Engineering Technology (or related field); CET designation or eligibility is considered an asset
  • Minimum 2–4 years of surveying experience in an engineering or construction environment, or equivalent combination of education and experience
  • Proficiency with survey equipment and software, including GNSS/RTK, total stations, LiDAR, and Autodesk Civil 3D
  • Strong understanding of surveying principles, data collection, and construction layout practices
  • Demonstrated ability to analyze data, interpret design models, and resolve discrepancies with a high level of accuracy
  • Effective communication and collaboration skills to work with engineers, contractors, and project stakeholders
  • Ability to work in a physically demanding, outdoor environment, including uneven terrain, construction sites, and varying weather conditions
  • Valid driver’s licence and familiarity with safety practices and regulations in a construction or field environment

Conditions of Employment:

  • Valid Alberta Class 5 Driver’s licence and submission of a 5-year Driver’s Abstract with less than 7 demerits
  • Ability to perform physical labour as part of the job duties and stand/walk for extended periods of time
