By joining the Division of Waste Management as a Geologist-Registered in Franklin County, you will have the
opportunity to assist the public by overseeing and carrying out the investigation, characterization, and
cleanup of Coal Combustion Residual (CCR) Superfund sites and a broad variety of other contaminated sites and
properties.

Holders of the Geologist Registered position will complete tasks such as:
  • Review corrective action and closure permits for Coal Combustion Residual (CCR) Superfund sites.
  • Perform technical review of site characterization and corrective action reports for releases at permitted
    CCR Superfund sites and for a variety of other releases of hazardous substances, pollutants and contaminants,
    often involving complex geologic and hydrogeologic settings.
  • Perform site inspections, site investigations, and environmental assessments involving the sampling of soil,
    groundwater, soil gas, and surface water.
  • Review Brownfield Redevelopment applications, environmental assessments, and management plans.
  • Provide technical assistance to the public and other government agencies.

Desired candidates possess the following requisite skills or experience applicable to the position:
  • The ability to review and analyze complex scientific and geologic information.
  • Excellent planning, time management, and organization skills.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.

Additional position information:
  • Must maintain a valid driver's license.
  • Ability to lift heavy objects and work in office and field conditions.
  • Be exposed to dangerous work conditions and rough terrain.

Must be registered by the Board of Registration for Professional Geologist (KRS Chapter 322A). http://bpg.ky.gov/. Must maintain any required licensure(s), certification(s), or other credentials for the length of employment in this job classification. Employing agency is responsible for ensuring employee possesses and maintains required licensure(s), certification(s) or other credentials.

Working Conditions

Work is typically performed both in an office and in a fieldwork setting.

Probationary Period

This job has an initial and promotional probationary period of 6 months, except as provided in KRS 18A.111.
