Job Description

We are seeking dedicated and detail-oriented General Utility Workers L3 to join the Con Edison team in our Meter & Test Department. In this role, you will learn to install, replace, test, and maintain electrical meters and AMI (Advanced Metering Infrastructure) communication modules. You will work on energized electric circuits, conduct network surveys, and assist in remediating communication issues. This position requires supporting lead mechanics to ensure work is completed safely and efficiently while adhering to safety protocols. The ideal candidate must be flexible to work various shifts, including nights and weekends, and respond to system emergencies in all weather conditions. Compliance with the companys Standards of Business Conduct, Environmental, Health, and Safety procedures, and department-specific Meter Engineering Procedures is essential.

Core Responsibilities

  • Learn how to install, replace, test, and maintain electrical meters and associated equipment, including AMI communication modules.
  • Work on energized electric circuits and learn how to survey and remediate the AMI communication network.
  • Act as a safety attendant for lead mechanics assisting in working safely and efficiently.
  • Carry, push, and pull tools and equipment up to 50lbs, and operate company vehicles.
  • Operate basic hand and power tools.
  • Use electronic devices, such as laptops or tablets, for accurately reporting time and updating work requests.
  • Stand, walk, and climb ladders or stairs for extended periods of time.
  • Work various shifts and in adverse weather conditions (heat, rain, snow, etc.). Shift is 7AM - 3:30PM.
  • Respond to system emergencies as needed.
  • Comply with the company's Standards of Business Conduct.
  • Work in compliance with the company's Environmental, Health, and Safety Procedures.
  • Comply with department-specific Meter Engineering Procedures.

Required Education/Experience

  • High School Diploma/GED

Licenses and Certifications

  • Driver's License Required

Physical Demands

  • Ability to respond to system emergencies
  • Able to work in all weather conditions, i.e. excessive heat and/or cold
  • Perform extended driving through heavy traffic and severe off-road conditions
  • Perform heavy manual labor, i.e. push, pull, and lift up to 50lbs
  • Ability to carry tools and materials when climbing ladders and scaffolds, and entering confined spaces
  • Ability to work in inclement weather and adverse conditions (i.e., excessive heat, cold, noise, confined spaces)
  • Ability to work with, and in, the vicinity of high voltage and/or other high-energy systems
  • Ability to be approved to wear and use either a full or half-face respirator, without facial hair or other conditions that may interfere with the seal, in accordance with OSHA regulations
  • Stand, walk, and climb ladders and stairs for the duration of the workday
  • Stand, walk, lift, climb, bend, kneel, stoop, and/or reach for the duration of the workday
  • Ability to use hand tools and operate heavy machinery, i.e. jackhammers
  • Acknowledge that if selected, must pass a Physical Abilites Test (PAT)
  • Wear necessary Personal Protective Equipment (PPE), i.e. fire-retardant clothing and safety harnesses
  • Work with equipment with a manufacturer weight rating of 350lbs
  • Use equipment with a maximum weight rating of 375lbs when wearing and/or carrying 25lbs of clothing and equipment

Additional Physical Demands

  • The selected candidate will be assigned a System Emergency Assignment (i.e., an emergency response role) and will be expected to work non-business hours during emergencies, which may include nights, weekends, and holidays.
  • Must be able to respond to Company emergencies by performing a System Emergency Assignment to restore service to our customers.
