Job Description

The General Utility Worker L1-2 performs mechanical, electrical, and general maintenance work in support of Steam Operations Maintenance at the 59th Street Generating Station. Responsibilities include assisting with the inspection, maintenance, troubleshooting, and repair of steam boilers, turbines, generators, water treatment systems, auxiliary equipment, and facility support systems, as well as supporting the upkeep of HVAC, plumbing, electrical, and related station infrastructure to ensure safe and reliable operations.

The position performs preventive and corrective maintenance, asbestos-related work, and emergency response activities while working in an industrial environment. The successful candidate must safely utilize tools and equipment, interpret technical drawings and documentation, and successfully complete required training, licenses, and certifications.

Core Responsibilities

• Perform preventive, corrective, and emergency maintenance on steam boilers, turbines, generators, water treatment systems, auxiliary equipment, and facility support systems to support safe and reliable station operations.
• Maintain, repair, install, and replace power piping systems, associated valves, tanks, vessels, and related mechanical components.
• Inspect, troubleshoot, maintain, and repair rotating mechanical equipment, including pumps, motors, fans, blowers, and associated equipment.
• Install, maintain, troubleshoot, and repair utility electrical equipment, electrical components, circuits, and related systems.
• Read and interpret schematic drawings, engineering prints, blueprints, sketches, and other technical documentation to perform maintenance and repair activities.
• Utilize hand tools, field power tools, precision measuring instruments, diagnostic equipment, and electrical test equipment to perform maintenance, troubleshooting, installation, and repair work.
• Troubleshoot and diagnose mechanical and electrical equipment failures and implement corrective actions to restore equipment to service.
• Perform maintenance activities involving pumps, coupling alignment, bearing maintenance, pipe fitting, conduit bending, boiler tube repair, rigging, and related station maintenance functions.
• Support welding, oxy-acetylene torch cutting, scaffolding, crane operations, and other specialized maintenance activities in accordance with training and qualification requirements.
• Perform asbestos abatement and maintenance activities associated with power generation equipment and station infrastructure based on operational needs.
• Maintain working knowledge of confined space entry, industrial safety practices, mechanical systems, electrical systems, rigging, scaffolding, welding processes, and other maintenance disciplines required to support station operations.
• Prepare accurate and concise maintenance records, reports, work documentation, and related operational records.
• Operate Company vehicles and equipment as required to support departmental operations.
• Apply safe work practices and comply with all applicable safety, environmental, and operational procedures, rules, and regulations.
• Respond to station and system emergencies and support restoration and recovery activities as assigned.
• Work rotating shifts, weekends, holidays, overtime, and emergency assignments as required to meet operational needs.
• Obtain and maintain required licenses, certifications, and qualifications, including a Transportation Worker Identification Credential (TWIC) and New York State/New York City Asbestos Handler's License within established timeframes.
• Successfully complete required technical, safety, and career path training programs.

Required Education/Experience

• High School Diploma/GED

Relevant Work Experience

• Ability to obtain and maintain required licenses and certifications, including a Transportation Worker Identification Credential (TWIC) and New York State/New York City Asbestos Handler's License within established timeframes. Required
• Prior demonstrated experience in general construction, industrial maintenance, mechanical work, electrical work, control systems, utility operations, power generation, or a related technical field. Preferred
• Ability to learn and apply mechanical, electrical, and station maintenance principles, practices, and procedures. Preferred
• Ability to learn to read and interpret blueprints, sketches, schematic drawings, engineering prints, and other technical documentation. Preferred
• Experience using hand tools, power tools, precision measuring equipment, and other maintenance-related equipment. Preferred
• Ability to perform inspections, troubleshooting, preventive maintenance, and repair activities on industrial, mechanical, or electrical equipment and systems. Preferred
• Ability to learn and safely perform work involving confined space entry, rigging, oxy-acetylene torch cutting, asbestos-related activities, and basic electrical systems. Preferred
• Ability to accurately complete maintenance records, work documentation, and required reports. Preferred
• Demonstrated aptitude to learn new technical skills, successfully complete career path training requirements, and perform work in an industrial power generation environment. Preferred

Physical Demands

• Ability to respond to system emergencies
• Able to work in all weather conditions, i.e. excessive heat and/or cold
• Perform heavy manual labor, i.e. push, pull, and lift up to 50lbs
• Ability to carry tools and materials when climbing ladders and scaffolds, and entering confined spaces
• Ability to work in adverse conditions that include, noise, confined spaces, and high elevations
• Ability to climb ladders and stairs
• Perform work in underground vaults through manholes
• Ability to work in inclement weather and adverse conditions (i.e., excessive heat, cold, noise, confined spaces)
• Ability to work with, and in, the vicinity of high voltage and/or other high-energy systems
• Ability to be approved to wear and use either a full or half-face respirator, without facial hair or other conditions that may interfere with the seal, in accordance with OSHA regulations
• Ability to be approved to wear and use either a full or half-face respirator and self-contained breathing apparatus (SCBA), without facial hair or other conditions that may interfere with the seal, in accordance with OSHA regulations
• Ability to climb in and out of manholes and excavations
• Stand, walk, and climb ladders and stairs for the duration of the workday
• Stand, walk, lift, climb, bend, kneel, stoop, and/or reach for the duration of the workday
• Ability to use hand tools and operate heavy machinery, i.e. jackhammers
• Ability to travel to company locations to work on storm restoration and heat contingencies
• Acknowledge that if selected, must pass a Physical Abilites Test (PAT)
• Use hand-eye coordination to adjust controls on equipment
• Wear necessary Personal Protective Equipment (PPE), i.e. fire-retardant clothing and safety harnesses
• Work rotating shifts, including nights, midnights, weekends, and holidays

Additional Physical Demands

• The selected candidate will be assigned a System Emergency Assignment (i.e., an emergency response role) and will be expected to work non-business hours during emergencies, which may include nights, weekends, and holidays.
