This posting is for a General Utility Worker in the Charlotte Equipment Shop in Mecklenburg County. Duties involve a variety of manual tasks in the upkeep of the Departments standards to include sweeping, mopping, dusting, removal of trash, cleaning of windows, cleaning of restrooms, yard maintenance, washing of equipment, light mechanical repairs and assisting Vehicle/Equipment Repair Technicians in various projects, picking up parts, and performs other related duties as required.

Selected candidate will be expected to have some knowledge of the application of trade skills to do the duties assigned. Skill in the use and care of equipment and tools used in performing work assignment. Ability to perform assigned tasks and follow oral and written instructions as directed by supervisor. Work will require exposure to all types of weather. Work may require lifting to 50lbs. Position requires work during any adverse weather or extreme circumstances which can lead to working extended daily hours, weekends, and holidays. Ability to perform duties of position in accordance with all safety regulations; prepare and maintain paperwork essential to employment, equipment repair, inventory, and service records; understand both written and oral instructions; move parts and material necessary to repair and maintain equipment; and safely operate equipment for testing purposes. Ability to demonstrate commitment to provide safe working environment by leading by example. Ability to read and interpret Original Equipment Manufacturer (OEM) manuals. The selected applicant will be expected to legally operate a motor vehicle. Safety toe shoes required.

Knowledge Skills and Abilities/Management Preferences

Salary Grade: NC01: Salary Range: $31,200 - $48,810

  • Experience using small hand tools such as shovels, rakes, brooms, post hole diggers, hammer, screwdriver, torch, etc.

  • Experience operating power tools such as lawn mowers, hand trimmers, air compressors, chainsaw, weed eater, skill saw, drill, etc.

  • Experience performing manual labor
