Who You'll Work With
You will join one of our 45 offices in the U.S., becoming part of a team of over 1,500 professionals dedicated to shaping the world around us. As a General Superintendent within our Construction Practice, you will provide leadership and oversight for multiple industrial construction projects serving Food & Beverage, Consumer Packaged Goods, Life Sciences, Advanced Technology, and Manufacturing clients.
The General Superintendent serves as the senior field operations leader, partnering closely with Project Directors, Construction Managers, Project Managers, Safety Managers, and client leadership teams to ensure successful execution of projects while maintaining the highest standards of safety, quality, schedule, and field productivity. This role provides direct leadership and mentorship to Superintendents and field staff across multiple projects and geographic locations.
What You'll Do
Field Operations Leadership
- Provide overall leadership and oversight of field construction operations across multiple projects and job sites.
- Establish and maintain consistent project execution standards, safety expectations, and quality requirements across all assigned projects.
- Lead, mentor, train, and develop Superintendents, Assistant Superintendents, and field personnel.
- Evaluate field staffing needs and coordinate resources to support project demands.
- Serve as the primary escalation point for complex construction, schedule, safety, and subcontractor issues.
- Partner with Project Managers and Construction Directors to develop project execution strategies and recovery plans.
- Promote a culture of safety, accountability, teamwork, and operational excellence.
Project Oversight
- Provide strategic oversight for multiple industrial construction projects from pre-construction through commissioning and closeout.
- Monitor project progress, productivity, schedule adherence, quality performance, and safety metrics.
- Conduct regular site visits and field audits to ensure compliance with company standards and client expectations.
- Review and support development of site logistics plans, staffing plans, and construction sequencing strategies.
- Identify project risks and implement corrective actions to mitigate schedule, quality, or budget impacts.
- Ensure consistent implementation of project controls, documentation, and reporting processes.
- Support project teams in managing inspections, permitting activities, and project turnover.
Pre-Construction Leadership
- Participate in constructability reviews, planning sessions, and project execution strategy development.
- Support estimating and operations teams during project pursuits and proposals.
- Review staffing requirements, equipment needs, logistics plans, and project schedules.
- Evaluate subcontractor capability, workforce plans, and site readiness requirements.
- Collaborate with project teams to establish project-specific safety, quality, and execution plans.
Construction Execution
- Provide oversight and support to site Superintendents to ensure successful project delivery.
- Monitor labor productivity, subcontractor performance, and field coordination activities.
- Facilitate resolution of field conflicts, design issues, and construction challenges.
- Conduct regular project reviews focused on safety, schedule, quality, and resource utilization.
- Ensure job sites maintain company standards regarding housekeeping, organization, and professionalism.
- Support commissioning, startup, and turnover activities as required.
Safety Leadership
- Champion a proactive safety culture and ensure compliance with all company HSEQ programs and regulatory requirements.
- Lead safety reviews and audits across multiple project sites.
- Review project safety performance metrics and implement corrective actions when necessary.
- Partner with Safety Managers to drive continuous improvement initiatives and achieve incident-free projects.
- Ensure Superintendents are properly trained and equipped to effectively manage job site safety.
Scheduling & Planning
- Review and evaluate master project schedules and recovery plans.
- Ensure Superintendents maintain effective short-term planning through look-ahead schedules.
- Identify schedule risks and work with project teams to implement corrective measures.
- Support resource planning and allocation across multiple projects and regions.
Client & Team Leadership
- Build and maintain strong relationships with clients, contractors, subcontractors, and regulatory agencies.
- Represent Design Group during client meetings, project reviews, and operational planning discussions.
- Foster collaboration between project management, engineering, procurement, quality, and field teams.
- Provide leadership that promotes employee development, engagement, and retention.
- Lead by example and uphold Design Group's core values in all interactions.
Travel
- Travel regularly to project sites throughout assigned regions.
- Support projects requiring extended site visits during critical construction, commissioning, and startup phases.
- Work schedules may include nights, weekends, and holidays as project needs dictate.
What You'll Bring
- 15+ years of industrial construction experience, including significant experience leading field operations on large and complex projects.
- 5+ years of experience as a Senior Superintendent, Lead Superintendent, General Superintendent, Construction Manager, or equivalent leadership role.
- Proven ability to supervise multiple concurrent industrial construction projects and field teams.
- Experience managing projects ranging from $10M to $250M+ in industrial, manufacturing, food & beverage, life sciences, advanced technology, or mission-critical environments.
- Strong knowledge of construction means and methods, site logistics, scheduling, quality control, and subcontractor management.
- Demonstrated success building, mentoring, and developing high-performing field teams.
- OSHA 30 certification required; OSHA 500, CHST, CSP, or equivalent certifications preferred.
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office, Procore, Bluebeam, Primavera P6, and other construction management software.
- Experience working within active operating manufacturing facilities preferred.
- Bachelor's degree in Construction Management, Engineering, Architecture, or related field preferred; equivalent experience considered.
