Job Description

The General Superintendent is the senior field operations leader responsible for the overall execution, safety, quality, and consistency of construction operations across all projects in the Atlanta market. This role provides strategic leadership, oversight, and mentorship to Superintendents and Senior Superintendents, ensuring H. J. Russell’s standards for safety, quality, schedule, and client satisfaction are consistently achieved. The General Superintendent is responsible for and directs all field-related functions, including logistics, planning, design-assist, safety, documentation and all closeout functions. The General Super will coordinate with Business Development, Marketing, Pre-Construction, Estimating, Scheduling, Human Resources and Project Management.

The General Superintendent serves as the primary steward of field excellence, aligning field operations with company goals, operational standards, and risk management practices while developing the next generation of field leadership.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include the following and other assigned duties:

Field Operations & Means / Methods

  • Plans, sequences, and oversees all field execution across assigned projects.
  • Provides expert leadership on construction means and methods, constructability, codes, inspections, logistics, and site constraints.
  • Leads standardized preparatory meetings with each trade prior to starting each feature of work, including deep-dive reviews of approved submittals, plans, and specifications.
  • Ensures standardized Site Logistics Plans are developed, maintained, posted, and actively used on every project.
  • Anticipates execution challenges and proactively adjusts sequencing, staffing, and logistics to maintain productivity, safety, and schedule certainty.

Safety Leadership

  • Champions and enforces the H. J. Russell safety culture across all projects.
  • Proactively identifies hazards and ensures corrective actions are implemented and sustained.
  • Ensures standardized subcontractor safety orientation protocols are followed on every project.
  • Ensures required safety inspections are completed at all levels:
    • Weekly by all field personnel
    • Monthly by project management personnel
  • Leads by example to build a respectful, accountable, and prevention-focused safety culture.

Scheduling & Planning

  • Ensures Superintendents own and actively manage project schedules, including weekly updates and look-ahead planning.
  • Maintains working knowledge of scheduling tools (MS Project and/or Primavera P6) to verify schedules are realistic, current, and properly sequenced.
  • Actively manages critical path activities and adapts plans to mitigate schedule risks and changes.
  • Reinforces accountability for schedule recovery planning when deviations occur.

Quality Management

  • Establishes and enforces workmanship standards across all projects.
  • Prevents rework through proactive planning, first-work inspections, and ongoing field verification.
  • Ensures compliance with contract documents, approved submittals, specifications, and Company quality standards.
  • Coaches Superintendents and trade partners on quality expectations and corrective action processes.

Trade Partner & Supply Chain Coordination

  • Aligns subcontractors and vendors with project sequencing, logistics plans, and site constraints.
  • Ensures Superintendents review and approve all subcontract and purchase order scopes of work prior to issuance.
  • Resolves trade conflicts promptly to maintain workflow and productivity.
  • Oversees material delivery planning, site access, staging, and laydown strategies to support efficient execution.

Communication & Stakeholder Management

  • Communicates clearly, timely, and professionally with owners, designers, inspectors, project management teams, field leadership, and trade partners.
  • Ensures daily reports, photo documentation, and field records are accurate, complete, and consistently maintained.
  • Serves as a senior field representative in meetings with clients, architects, inspectors, and community stakeholders when required.
  • Sets expectations for respectful, solution-oriented communication at all levels of the project team.

Leadership & People Development

  • Sets clear performance, behavior, and accountability standards for field leadership.
  • Identifies high-potential team members and mentors them to become effective leaders.
  • Utilizes the Workstyle Program and Workstyle Action Summaries to coach teams and improve effectiveness.
  • Ensures teams are staffed with appropriately trained professionals and supported in their personal and professional development.
  • Partners with Talent Development and outside consultants to strengthen standardized practices, leadership skills, and team effectiveness.

Problem Solving & Decision Making

  • Diagnoses root causes of field issues related to safety, quality, schedule, productivity, or coordination.
  • Makes timely, fact-based decisions aligned with project goals and Company values.
  • Recognizes potential risks and manages them proactively.
  • Documents lessons learned and drives continuous improvement across projects.

Business & Financial Acumen

  • Understands how field execution decisions impact margin, cash flow, risk exposure, and client satisfaction.
  • Partners with Project Management to support commercial outcomes without compromising safety or quality.
  • Reviews and ensures understanding of Monthly Forecast Reports by field leadership.
  • Monitors performance against projected profit margins and supports corrective actions when needed.
  • Supports business development efforts by contributing to client satisfaction, proposal development, and early project planning.

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES

Is responsible for the overall direction, coordination, and evaluation of the Group. Carries out supervisory responsibilities in accordance with RUSSELL's policies and applicable laws: including planning, assigning, and directing work; appraising personnel performance; addressing complaints and resolving problems.

QUALIFICATIONS

EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE

  • Bachelor's degree in Engineering, Architecture, Building Construction.
  • Fifteen years of related experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Experience working in the wood stick framed and commercial construction markets

LANGUAGE SKILLS

Ability to read, analyze, and interpret general business periodicals, professional journals, technical procedures, or governmental regulations. Ability to write reports, business correspondence, and procedure manuals. Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from groups of managers, clients, customers, and the general public.

MATHEMATICAL SKILLS

Ability to work with mathematical concepts such as probability and statistical inference, and fundamentals of plane and solid geometry and trigonometry. Ability to apply concepts such as fractions, percentages, ratios, and proportions to practical situations.

REASONING ABILITY

Ability to define problems, collect data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions. Ability to interpret an extensive variety of technical instructions in mathematical or diagram form and deal with several abstract and concrete variables.

CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS

Production experience with Microsoft Suite, Primavera P6, CMiC and Procore. OSHA 30 certified.
