About the role

Judit Inc. is hiring General Shelter Workers to support emergency shelter operations for Florida’s hurricane response. You’ll work under a Shift Supervisor and Shelter Manager to give displaced residents a safe, clean and orderly place to stay. Many will be elderly, have disabilities, or be families with young children. This is fast-paced, hands-on work that matters.

Key responsibilities

  • Registration and intake: Greet residents as they arrive, complete registration forms, give out ID wristbands, and direct people to their assigned areas.
  • Shelter setup: Set up and break down cots, bedding, partitions and signage. Keep the sleeping areas organized.
  • Feeding support: Serve meals, snacks and water. Follow food safety and sanitation rules.
  • Supplies: Unload, stock and track supplies such as water, hygiene kits, blankets and cleaning materials.
  • Cleaning and sanitation: Keep restrooms, sleeping areas and common spaces clean so illness doesn’t spread.
  • Resident assistance:
  • Help residents with mobility, access or language needs.
  • Answer questions and point residents to services such as medical, mental health or FEMA assistance.
  • Monitoring and safety:
  • Walk common areas and watch for safety hazards, medical concerns or conflicts.
  • Report issues to the Shift Supervisor right away.
  • Shift handoffs: Share updates at the start and end of each shift so care continues without gaps.

Required:

  • 18 or older, with a high school diploma or GED.
  • Able to work 12-hour shifts, including nights and weekends, for the full deployment.
  • Able to stand and walk for long periods and lift up to 40 lbs.
  • Calm, patient and respectful with people under stress.
  • Able to pass a background check and drug screen. Some sites, such as public schools, need a Level 2 fingerprint background check.

Preferred:

  • Experience in customer service, hospitality, caregiving, healthcare, social services or security.
  • Experience with disaster response or shelters, such as Red Cross or CERT volunteering.
  • Bilingual in English and Spanish or Haitian Creole.
  • CPR/First Aid certification.
  • FEMA ICS-100 and IS-700 (free online, and can be completed before deployment).

Working conditions

  • You’ll work in emergency shelters such as schools, community centers and other public buildings, which may have limited privacy and shared spaces.
  • Conditions can be crowded, noisy and emotionally demanding.
  • You may be exposed to storm conditions, power outages and heat.
  • Lodging and meals during deployment may be provided at or near the shelter (details confirmed at offer).

Why join Judit

  • Weekly pay with a lot of overtime.
  • Meaningful work helping Florida communities in a crisis.
  • Priority consideration for future emergency response and government staffing assignments.
