Job Description

Lead the projects that shape a city. Empower the people who keep it moving.

We’re seeking a collaborative, visionary and outcomes‑focused leader to guide our Capital Projects portfolio — someone who brings clarity, empathy and confidence to complex programs, and who thrives on creating environments where people and projects succeed together.

As our General Manager Capital Projects, you will steward the full lifecycle of our capital works program, ensuring every project is delivered safely, sustainably and in alignment with our long‑term growth strategy. You’ll play a central role in shaping the infrastructure that keeps Melbourne moving — and in supporting the teams who make it possible.

Your purpose in this role

Drive end‑to‑end capital project delivery, governance and commercial performance in a way that strengthens our organisation, our people and the communities we serve.

  • Guide major city‑shaping projects that create meaningful, long‑term network impact
  • Champion safety, governance and performance across all works
  • Empower a high‑performing delivery team grounded in trust, accountability and shared success
  • Permanent full‑time position — please confirm

What you’ll lead

  • Capital project delivery — Shape and guide the full lifecycle: business case, design, delivery, commissioning and transition into operations.
  • Portfolio governance — Establish clear frameworks, standards and reporting that support transparency, alignment and confident decision‑making.
  • Commercial performance — Lead budgeting, forecasting, business cases, procurement and commercial risk with a balanced, thoughtful approach.
  • Safety & compliance — Foster a culture of care, wellbeing and zero harm across all sites.
  • Stakeholder leadership — Build trusted, collaborative relationships with operations, HSE, finance, contractors, regulators and the executive team.
  • Team capability — Develop and support a high‑performing team that values continuous learning, inclusion and collective achievement.

What success looks like

  • Capital projects delivered safely, efficiently and with integrity
  • Strong governance, accurate forecasting and thoughtful commercial stewardship
  • Deeply trusted relationships across internal and external partners
  • New assets integrated seamlessly into day‑to‑day operations
  • A team that feels supported, empowered and proud of the work they deliver

What you bring

  • Senior leadership experience delivering large, complex capital programs
  • Strong commercial, contractual and financial capability
  • A grounded understanding of governance, risk and compliance
  • Confidence engaging with executive and board‑level stakeholders
  • Background in engineering, construction or project management (desirable)
  • Experience in regulated or asset‑intensive environments (desirable)
  • A leadership style that values collaboration, clarity, empathy and shared accountability

Why this role matters

Our network is growing rapidly — and so is the scale of the projects shaping its future. This role offers the opportunity to create lasting community impact, improve the passenger experience, and lead a team whose work directly supports how Melbourne moves, connects and thrives.

About Kinetic

Established over 45 years ago, Kinetic has grown to become the largest bus operator in Australia and New Zealand, and a global, multi-modal transport network with operations that span across the UK, Europe and Singapore.

We began in 1978 with Melbourne’s Skybus – a cost efficient, reliable airport transfer service. Today, we manage a global network of bus and rail services, with a team of 36,000 dedicated people and 11,000 buses seamlessly moving over 100 million passengers every year.

We’re the trusted operator of urban, regional, school and charter bus services across Australia and New Zealand. We operate 40 per cent of buses in Queensland, a third of Melbourne’s bus network, and almost half of bus services in Tasmania. In NZ, we’re proud to partner with councils in Auckland, Christchurch, Wellington and Tauranga.

Our expertise spans continents, operating in five countries across Europe. In the UK, we run the Go Ahead network – alongside joint venture partner Globalvia – which includes the Govia Thameslink rail link, the largest and most complex rail system in the country.

We believe in improving the communities in which we live and operate, and making a positive impact on people’s lives.

We’re removing the diesel buses that emit millions of tons of greenhouse gases every year. We’re putting women up front. And we believe in LGBTQI+ inclusion and the freedom to be your true self.

Governments, airports, businesses, schools and councils count on us every day. You too, can count on Kinetic.
