The General Maintenance/Plumber performs skilled plumbing work and a variety of general maintenance duties throughout Boone County Schools. The employee is responsible for installing, inspecting, maintaining, troubleshooting, and repairing plumbing systems, fixtures, equipment, and related building components.
The employee assists with the maintenance and repair of school buildings, administrative facilities, athletic facilities, and other district property to ensure that facilities remain safe, sanitary, functional, and suitable for students, employees, and the public.
Qualifications
- High school diploma or equivalent.
- Meet all requirements established for the Plumber II classification under applicable West Virginia law and Boone County Board of Education policy.
- Possess training, experience, and demonstrated competency in plumbing installation, maintenance, and repair.
- Possess or obtain any plumbing license, certification, or permit required by state or local law for assigned work.
- Possess a valid driver's license and maintain an acceptable driving record.
- Ability to read and interpret blueprints, diagrams, equipment manuals, work orders, and technical instructions.
- Knowledge of plumbing systems, fixtures, pumps, valves, drains, water lines, sewer lines, and related equipment.
- Ability to safely use hand tools, power tools, testing equipment, ladders, lifts, and other maintenance equipment.
- Ability to work independently and as part of a maintenance team.
- Ability to communicate effectively with supervisors, school administrators, employees, contractors, vendors, and members of the public.
- Ability to successfully complete required background checks and employment screenings.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
- Install, inspect, maintain, troubleshoot, and repair plumbing systems in district buildings and facilities.
- Repair or replace faucets, sinks, toilets, urinals, water fountains, valves, pumps, drains, traps, pipes, and related fixtures.
- Diagnose and repair water leaks, clogged drains, sewer problems, low-water-pressure conditions, and other plumbing concerns.
- Install and repair water supply lines, waste lines, drainage systems, and plumbing connections.
- Perform preventive maintenance on plumbing systems and related equipment.
- Inspect plumbing systems to identify unsafe conditions, deterioration, leaks, or potential failures.
- Respond promptly to emergency plumbing and maintenance situations.
- Shut off water, isolate damaged systems, and take appropriate steps to prevent additional property damage.
- Perform general building maintenance and repair work as assigned.
- Assist with repairs involving doors, locks, ceilings, walls, flooring, roofing, fixtures, and other building components.
- Assist other maintenance employees with electrical, HVAC, carpentry, grounds, and facilities-related projects when qualified and directed.
- Complete work orders accurately and document materials, labor, repairs, and follow-up needs.
- Prioritize assigned work in coordination with the Operations Complex Supervisor.
- Maintain an appropriate inventory of plumbing parts, tools, supplies, and materials.
- Notify the supervisor when replacement parts, specialized equipment, or contracted services are needed.
- Inspect tools, vehicles, and equipment before use and report damage or unsafe conditions.
- Operate district-owned vehicles in a safe and responsible manner.
- Maintain assigned work areas, vehicles, tools, and equipment in a clean and orderly condition.
- Follow applicable building codes, plumbing codes, safety requirements, manufacturer instructions, and district procedures.
- Follow all requirements concerning asbestos, lead, mold, hazardous materials, confined spaces, lockout/tagout procedures, and personal protective equipment.
- Coordinate work with principals and building administrators to reduce interruptions to instructional programs.
- Secure work areas and protect students, employees, and the public from hazards.
- Assist with snow removal, emergency response, building preparation, and other district operational needs when assigned.
- Work beyond the regular schedule when required for emergencies, school closures, weather events, or urgent repairs.
- Maintain confidentiality regarding students, employees, security systems, and district operations.
- Demonstrate regular and reliable attendance.
- Perform other duties as assigned by the Operations Complex Supervisor or Superintendent.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
The employee must demonstrate:
- Knowledge of accepted plumbing practices, tools, materials, and repair methods.
- Knowledge of occupational safety practices and applicable building and plumbing codes.
- Skill in identifying the source of plumbing and maintenance problems.
- Skill in repairing and replacing plumbing fixtures, pipes, valves, drains, and related components.
- Ability to estimate the materials and time needed to complete assigned work.
- Ability to organize work and respond to multiple maintenance requests.
- Ability to follow oral and written directions.
- Ability to maintain accurate work records.
- Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships.
- Ability to perform duties with limited supervision.
Physical Requirements
The employee must be able to:
- Stand, walk, bend, stoop, kneel, crouch, crawl, climb, reach, push, pull, and work in restricted spaces.
- Use ladders, scaffolding, lifts, and other access equipment.
- Lift, carry, move, and position tools, equipment, supplies, and materials commonly associated with plumbing and general maintenance work.
- Perform work above shoulder level and below floor level.
- Work in mechanical rooms, crawl spaces, ceiling areas, rooftops, trenches, and other confined or difficult-to-access locations.
- Maintain sufficient vision, hearing, strength, balance, coordination, and manual dexterity to safely perform assigned duties.
- Wear required personal protective equipment.

Work Environment
The employee may work:
- Indoors and outdoors in varying weather conditions.
- Around water, sewage, dust, dirt, fumes, chemicals, noise, machinery, and construction materials.

- Around students, employees, contractors, and members of the public.
- In emergency situations requiring an immediate response.
Evaluation
Performance will be evaluated by the Operations Complex Supervisor in accordance with Boone County Board of Education policy and applicable West Virginia law.
Terms of Employment
Employment is for 261 days, with compensation established at Plumber II, Pay Grade G, according to the Boone County Schools service personnel salary schedule. The regular work schedule is 7:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. Duties, work location, and schedule may be adjusted to meet the operational needs of Boone County Schools.
