Job Description
The General Maintenance Worker I performs a wide range of skilled facility and campus maintenance tasks including carpentry, plumbing, electrical, and HVAC at a level not requiring formal schooling or licensure. Performs project related work as well as handling of emergency calls. Performs preventive maintenance of tools and equipment and follows federal regulations governing safety, environmental protection, hazardous waste disposal, and the use of chemicals and materials common to facilities maintenance or construction.

General Duties:
  • Uses hand, pneumatic, and power tools to perform assigned work.
  • Operates multimeters and other testing equipment as needed.
  • Check wear on equipment parts such as v-belts, oil and water levels on equipment; identify conditions that could lead to equipment failure.
  • Check heating, ventilating and air-conditioning systems for malfunctions; replace filters; grease and oil equipment parts to maintain proper working condition and prevent failures.
  • Resets tripped breakers, replaces fuses, makes minor repairs to existing light fixtures.
  • Cuts and installs replacement ceiling tiles.
  • Inspects and repairs carpet cleaners, vacuums, shop vacs, electric power tools, floor buffers, and assorted electronic appliances.
  • Repairs, cleans, and maintains shop equipment, tools, and vehicles.
  • Completes truck and shop inventories as assigned.
  • Cleans and organizes storage and equipment rooms.
  • Maintains an organized work area, which includes cleanliness, safety and security of materials.
  • Repairs or replaces damaged plumbing fixtures such as but not limited to sinks, toilets, showers, tubs, water heaters, sump pumps, electronic flush valves and faucets, and drinking fountains.
  • Unclogs drains using manual or mechanical augers.
  • Assists co-workers when requested to facilitate timely and safe repairs.
  • Makes adjustments to doors and locks.
  • Provides means of access through walls, floors, and other structures as may be required by dismantling or cutting through structural and other physical barriers in order to gain access for repairs or for new installations.
  • Restores assigned work sites to their original condition at the completion of work by removing tools, materials, and debris, drop cloths, and tarpaulins used during the project, returning furniture and equipment to their proper location, setting up equipment that had been dismantled, and coordinating the cleaning, painting, or replacing tile(s) and other structural effects through which holes have been cut.
  • Answer’s trouble calls when dispatched, to ensure efficient day today operation of the university.
  • Responds and participates in storm clean up or other emergencies either natural or manmade.
  • Required overtime for events, student activities, and emergency call out situations.
  • Maintains knowledge of state, federal, and local codes and requirements that apply to the facilities maintenance.
  • Complies with federal regulations governing environmental protection, hazardous waste disposal, chemical substances and materials.
  • Interprets schematic drawings, blueprints, OM manuals, and vendor literature.
  • Performs other duties as assigned deemed necessary to meet the needs of the Marshall University School of Medicine including performance of work in support of other shops/trades.

Required Qualifications

Education
  • High School Diploma/ GED
  • Driver’s License
  • Eligible for Universal EPA Certification
  • Completion of a recognized trades apprenticeship program OR equivalent technical training/on-the-job training.

Experience
  • 1 year experience in general building maintenance or construction across multiple trades OR an equivalent combination of related experience, Facilities and Operations/Internship experience, education, and training.

Preferred Qualifications

Education
  • State Issued Licensed in a Mechanical Trade.
  • Universal EPA Certification
  • Completion of a vocational or technical program in Building Maintenance, Facilities Maintenance, Construction Trades, or a related field.


Experience
  • Experience performing general maintenance work in a higher education, healthcare, or large institutional facilities environment.
