Job Description

Augustana University invites applications for a General Maintenance Technician within Facility Services. This hands-on position helps maintain the buildings, grounds, equipment, and systems that support the University community each day.

The General Maintenance Technician performs a wide variety of maintenance and repair work across campus, including basic carpentry, plumbing, HVAC, electrical, appliance repair, doors and locks, equipment maintenance, and general facility repairs. We are looking for someone with strong mechanical aptitude who enjoys troubleshooting problems, working independently, and taking on a variety of projects rather than doing the same thing every day.

What You’ll Do

• Perform scheduled, preventive, and unscheduled maintenance and repairs throughout University facilities.
• Diagnose and repair plumbing fixtures, doors, locks, windows, cabinets, finishes, equipment, and other building components.
• Complete installations, repairs, replacements, and general remodeling projects.
• Assist with basic carpentry, plumbing, HVAC, electrical, grounds, and landscaping work.
• Operate hand and power tools as well as University equipment and machinery needed to complete maintenance projects.
• Respond to facility emergencies and prioritize repairs based on urgency.
• Read and work from blueprints, schematics, technical manuals, pictures, and written or verbal instructions.
• Maintain University vehicles, machinery, tools, equipment, and maintenance supplies.
• Serve as a key resource for campus lock and key systems, including installing and repairing locks and door hardware, duplicating keys, and maintaining key records.
• Maintain accurate records of maintenance activities and use the University's ticketing system to manage and troubleshoot repair requests.
• Follow University safety procedures and OSHA requirements and help maintain clean, safe work areas.

What We’re Looking For

• High school diploma or equivalent.
• Three to five years of general maintenance experience.
• Strong mechanical aptitude and problem-solving skills.
• Working knowledge of basic carpentry, HVAC, plumbing, electrical, and general maintenance concepts.
• Experience reading blueprints and using hand and power tools.
• Valid South Dakota driver's license and a good driving record.

Experience with welding, soldering or brazing, heavy machinery and equipment, or maintenance within a higher education environment is a plus.

Schedule & Work Environment

The regular schedule is 8:00 a.m.–4:30 p.m. during the academic year and 7:00 a.m.–3:30 p.m. during the summer, with participation in an on-call rotation. Occasional evening, weekend, holiday, or extended-day work may be required to support campus operations.
