7:30am-4:30 Monday-Friday, Call maybe required

The General Maintenance employee performs skilled work in the repair, renovation, and maintenance of University buildings and facilities. Responsibilities include a variety of maintenance tasks, such as electrical, plumbing, and carpentry work, with a primary emphasis on painting. The position requires the ability to inspect, troubleshoot, and complete repairs to ensure University facilities remain safe, functional, and well maintained.

Duties and Responsibilities:

• Lifts and carries desks, chairs, tables, beds, wardrobes, and other furniture from residences or apartments.
• Operates pesticide sprayers to spray residence halls and apartments.
• Drives University vans and small trucks to transport furniture, cleaning supplies, tools, fixtures, or parts required for projects.
• Instructs maintenance subordinates in appropriate maintenance or repair tasks.
• Installs, maintains, and repairs water lines, sewers, lavatories, commodes, gas lines and gas heaters in apartments or residence halls.
• Installs, maintains, alters and/or repairs wiring, lighting, power appliances, light machinery, ovens, ranges, fans, water heaters, and overhead circuits.
• Installs, maintains, and repairs smaller electric motors and related electrical and mechanical equipment.
• Performs a variety of general carpentry including repair and/or construction of tables, chairs, cupboards, book shelves, computer tables, benches, and cabinets; performs skilled bench work; repairs doors and locks, and replaces broken glass.
• Reads relevant work orders, instructions, equipment manuals, labels, and other materials that are written in English.
• Performs other duties as assigned.

Required Minimum Qualifications:

• Any combination of training and experience equivalent to: High school graduation and three years experience in routine and general maintenance which includes carpentry, plumbing, and electrical work.
• Valid Alabama state driver’s license.
