Job Description

Vertex Pharmaceuticals is looking for a Senior Accountant I to join its team and support the accounting operations within its Global Accounting Function based in Boston, United States.

As a key member of the end-to-end Record-To-Report (“RTR”) function for 20+ countries, the successful candidate will play a vital role in maintaining accurate financial records, ensuring compliance with the company’s accounting policies, and supporting Vertex’s financial objectives. Your expertise will contribute to the efficiency and effectiveness of Vertex’s financial operations on a global scale.

In addition to supporting the overall success of the RTR function, this position will be responsible for managing Vertex’s fixed asset and capital accounting. This includes ensuring accurate updates, maintaining proper documentation, and adhering to regular reporting requirements. They will also partner with other members of the accounting team and provide exposure to teams across other departments and offers development opportunities that can lead to advanced roles within Vertex.

Leveraging analytical skills, accounting expertise and a continuous improvement mindset the successful candidate will have the opportunity to make suggestions and implement improvements to ensure continuous enhancement of the organization.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:

MONTHLY RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Independent preparation and/or review of monthly and quarterly journal entries and account analyses and reconciliations for several general ledger accounts across Vertex’s various entities.
  • Assist in maintaining accurate records of fixed assets, including monthly updates to asset classifications, tracking acquisitions and disposals, and ensuring proper documentation for asset lifecycle management.
  • Provide support to the finance and accounting function by resolving discrepancies to provide a clear and accurate financial picture.
  • Provide support to the general ledger function by business partnering with the Real Estate, Facilities and Operations, and Finance function to maintain and reconcile various balance sheet accounts.
  • Support with new and on-going accounting projects. Proactively provides observations/recommendations to all levels of management on gaining efficiencies in the monthly GL Close process.
  • Coordinate SOX documentation and testing with the internal and external auditors and ensure internal policies and SOX procedures and controls are adhered to.

OTHER RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Identify opportunities for process optimization and automation to enhance efficiency, accuracy, and scalability.
  • Assist the team handling of any non-routine reporting transactions and ad-hoc accounting projects as required.
  • Build a partnership of trust and open communication with Vertex’s other accounting and finance functions and key stakeholders.
  • Assist with internal audit and SOX queries, including any audit questions as required.

EDUCATION:

  • Qualified accountant or working towards an accounting qualification (CPA/ACA/ACCA/CIMA preferred, but other financial qualifications will also be considered).
  • Bachelor’s Degree (or equivalent) in Finance or Accounting.
  • Big 4 experience is preferred.

SKILLS & EXPEREINCE:

  • Previous experience in a similar accounting role.
  • Strong understanding of accounting standards (e.g., IFRS, U.S. GAAP) and regulatory requirements.
  • General understanding of fixed assets, including asset classification, depreciation, and asset lifecycle management
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills to collaborate across all levels of the business.
  • Proven communication, negotiation and influencing skills in working with multiple stakeholders across multiple departments.
  • Continuous improvement mindset, with a passion for leveraging technology to enhance processes.
  • A self-starter with a hands-on workstyle, strong work ethic and can-do attitude.
  • Excellent Microsoft Office skills including advanced Excel expertise able of manipulating large data sets and modelling skills.
  • Working knowledge of EBS environments (Oracle or SAP) and/or Blackline experience is an advantage.
  • Experience working in a Global Accounting Functions and within a SOX compliant environment would be an advantage.
  • Demonstrated ability to learn quickly and work independently in a fast-paced corporate accounting environment.
  • Biotechnology or pharmaceutical industry experience is an advantage.

Pay Range:

$70,400 - $105,600

Disclosure Statement:

The range provided is based on what we believe is a reasonable estimate for the base salary pay range for this job at the time of posting. This role is eligible for an annual bonus and annual equity awards. Some roles may also be eligible for overtime pay, in accordance with federal and state requirements. Actual base salary pay will be based on a number of factors, including skills, competencies, experience, and other job-related factors permitted by law.
