The Public Works Department is seeking a General Laborer to support operations within the Solid Waste Division. This part-time position plays a key role in providing excellent customer service, supporting the residential cart program, and assisting with operations at the Recycling and Yard Waste Center. This position is regularly scheduled to work Wednesday through Saturday, 10:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. The schedule is subject to change based on operational needs, including inclement weather, winter weather events, emergency response activities, and other department priorities.
Responsibilities
Greet and assist residents utilizing the Recycling and Yard Waste Center.
Verify residency and provide information regarding recycling and yard waste disposal procedures.
Maintain the cleanliness, organization, and appearance of the Recycling and Yard Waste Center.
Perform mowing, trimming, litter removal, and general grounds maintenance.
Monitor inventory levels and communicate supply, equipment, and maintenance needs.
Assist with residential cart program activities, including inspections, deliveries, exchanges, and service verification.
Conduct route checks and field inspections related to residential trash and recycling collection services.
Document and report issues involving missed collections, cart placement, contamination, damaged carts, and program compliance.
Respond to resident concerns and provide customer service related to trash, recycling, and cart program operations.
Assist with winter weather operations, including dispatching and support activities as assigned.
Support general street maintenance operations as needed.
Operate vehicles, equipment, tools, and technology in a safe and efficient manner.
Utilize tablets and software applications to document field activities and complete assigned work.
Follow all department safety policies and procedures.
Perform other related duties as assigned.
Qualifications:
High School Diploma or GED or an equivalent combination of education and experience sufficient to successfully perform the essential duties of this position. Must possess a valid Driver’s License and automobile insurance; CDL preferred at the time of application or must be obtained within six (6) months of hire Knowledge of Kansas City, KS streets is preferred. Ability to operate a two-way radio, tablet, computer, and follow oral and written instructions. Capable of standing, sitting, or walking for extended periods and performing physical labor, including lifting, carrying, or dragging objects weighing up to 50 pounds. Ability to analyze work conditions, recognize safety hazards, and respond appropriately to ensure a safe work environment. Must be able to work independently, and as part of a team. Bilingual is a plus.
Salary Range:
$22.71/hr.
