The garage mechanic, under general supervision, performs a variety of skilled tasks in connection with the maintenance of vehicles and other equipment. May perform body and fender work on vehicles and equipment.
Performs all work in a safe manner. Complies with all applicable safety rules, regulations and procedures. Performs all work they are qualified and trained to do in a manner to protect themselves, their fellow employees and the public from injury. Diagnoses, maintains and repairs all motorized and non-motorized equipment and components. Diagnoses, dismantles, inspects, overhauls (minor or major) mechanical or hydraulic systems on booms, derricks, diggers, bucket trucks, cranes, etc. Makes repairs to pumps, cylinders, valves, pulleys, levers and controls, lines, hoses, cables, drive assemblies and hydraulic winches. Maintains and repairs motorized and non-motorized special equipment such as small engines, portable and stationary generators, hydraulic, pneumatic and electric tools, winches and gear boxes and add-on components such as spot lights, rotary lights, etc. Performs housekeeping tasks. Drives vehicles and equipment to and from designated locations as necessary in performance of regular duties, including maintenance service calls; operates associated devices. Picks up and delivers vehicles, equipment, parts and supplies associated with garage work. Diagnoses and repairs vehicles and equipment in the field. Performs preventive maintenance on all equipment and components. Keeps records of labor and parts and vehicle data as prescribed. Lays out and fabricates steel, sheet metal, aluminum and fiberglass by welding, mechanical and chemical means. Sands and masks body, paints vehicles and equipment. Leads, trains and instructs employees in their work.
High school diploma and certified driver's license required. Highway alcohol and drug testing. Must be a journeyman mechanic with at least four years of experience with gas and diesel engines, hydraulics, and repair of various construction related equipment.
