The Functional Development Specialist plays a critical role in building a skilled, confident, and capable workforce. In this position, you will lead the design, delivery, and continuous improvement of training programs that strengthen employee performance across our operations. You will partner closely with business leaders and subject matter experts to identify learning gaps, develop effective training solutions, and support a culture of growth, safety, and operational excellence. Key Responsibilities:

  • Training Strategy & Program Design
    • Lead needs assessments and analyze systems, processes, and job requirements to identify training gaps.
    • Develop site‑wide training strategies based on business goals, including deployment planning.
    • Create and maintain a Skills Matrix outlining core skills and knowledge requirements by role and level.
    • Design training interventions using Instructional Design and Adult Learning principles.
    • Develop and embed blended learning methods (pre‑work, live training, on‑the‑job application, post‑learning reinforcement).
    • Establish and maintain training curricula, including Packaging/Operations curriculum across levels.
    • Prepare learning materials; review, evaluate, and update existing programs as needed.
  • Training Delivery & Execution
    • Conduct training sessions including onboarding, on‑the‑job training, refresher training, and cross‑functional skill development.
    • Train across multiple shifts and locations/buildings as needed.
    • Test trainees to measure progress; provide coaching and guidance to support effective learning.
    • Report training progress, participation, and effectiveness to leadership.
    • Coordinate training schedules aligned with new hire timelines, business needs, and operational demands.
  • Collaboration & Coaching
    • Partner with Subject Matter Experts and Local Trainers to co‑develop and co‑deliver training content.
    • Coach SMEs on instructional best practices, adult learning theory, and facilitation skills.
    • Collaborate with Organizational Development and Training partners to ensure standardization of training processes, tools, and content.
  • Training Evaluation, Monitoring & Compliance
    • Establish and maintain systems to track participation, compliance, and learning outcomes.
    • Assess training effectiveness and recommend continuous improvement strategies.
    • Support internal and external audits through accurate recordkeeping and documentation.
    • Verify and report on product and safety standards during training activities.
  • Additional Responsibilities
    • Maintain best‑practice training programs and recommend improvements.
    • Perform job task analyses for production areas.
    • Support initiatives across all buildings/teams to ensure consistent training coverage.
    • Perform other duties as assigned by management.


Experience & Education Requirements:

  • High school diploma required; Bachelor's degree in a related field preferred.
  • Professional training certifications (e.g., ASTD) preferred.
  • Minimum of 3 years’ experience designing, developing, and delivering training solutions, or serving in a training‑focused role such as trainer, teacher, coach, or facilitator.
  • Experience in project‑based and/or compliance‑driven work within Human Resources, Quality, or related functions in Manufacturing, Packaging, Supply Chain, or similar operational environments.
  • Experience with blended learning and the ability to demonstrate measurable business impact.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills; skilled in presenting and facilitating across all levels.
  • Ability to partner effectively with business leaders, SMEs, and cross‑functional teams.
  • Strong planning, organization, and time‑management capabilities.
  • Proficiency in the MS Office Suite (Excel, Word, PowerPoint) with demonstrated digital fluency; ability to navigate and apply technology effectively in a training environment.
  • Experience working with e‑learning development tools (e.g., Articulate, Storyline), Learning Management Systems (LMS), and virtual training platforms such as Webex is preferred.
  • Ability to interpret SOPs, GMPs, and standardized procedures.
  • Solid problem‑solving skills, including the ability to analyze variables and troubleshoot issues.
  • Ability to lift up to 50 lbs, stand, climb, bend, and kneel within a manufacturing/distribution environment.
  • Ability to reach up to 75 inches and climb ladders/stairs.
  • Ability to work with known allergens (e.g., fish oils) as needed
  • Flexibility to work multiple shifts and adapt to changing business demands.
  • Moderate to loud work environment.
