Towards the formation of the core group of founding faculty members, the School of Computing and Data Sciences (SCDS) at the American University of Beirut (AUB) invites applications for a full-time, tenure-track, open-rank position in Operations Research and Decision Sciences.
Founding faculty members will play a pivotal role in shaping the School’s culture and trajectory. They are expected to develop distinguished and independent research programs that help define the School’s academic and research directions, while contributing to high-quality teaching and mentorship at the undergraduate and graduate levels.
We seek candidates working in operations research and decision sciences, broadly defined, with particular interest in research at the intersection of large-scale, data-driven optimization, stochastic modeling, and machine learning. We place particular value on methodological contributions motivated by impactful applications, especially those involving network-based operations, including pricing and revenue management, supply chains, health care, and sustainability. The successful candidate will play an active role in the newly established CMA CGM Data Decisions and Operations cluster and will have access to dedicated cluster resources.
Candidates driven by scholarly excellence, interdisciplinary collaboration, and responsible innovation are strongly encouraged to apply.
Applicants should hold a PhD in operations research, management science, engineering, physics, statistics, applied mathematics, computer science, or a closely related field, by the start date of the appointment. Candidates for the rank of Assistant Professor should demonstrate strong potential for internationally recognized research and high-quality teaching. Candidates for the rank of Associate Professor (or higher) should have an established record of research accomplishment, scholarly impact, and academic leadership appropriate to rank.
Interested candidates are invited to submit application material including:
SCDS is one of the most significant academic expansions at the University in over seventy years. It brings together education, research, and innovation across computing, data science, and artificial intelligence. Its academic and research environment is designed to connect strong methodological foundations with consequential problems across disciplines
The school shall bring together a world-class interdisciplinary faculty body around a flagship undergraduate program in Data Sciences, then graduate (MSc and PhD) programs in Computational and Data Sciences. Its educational, research, and innovation mission shall be buttressed by three interlocked entities: the CMA CGM Artificial Intelligence and Insights Institute, the Research Computing Center and the Data MakerSpace.
The CMA CGM Artificial Intelligence and Insights Institute is a strategic computing intelligence platform embedded within the new School of Computing and Data Sciences at AUB. It serves as AUB's catalyst for modern computing practice and knowledge automation by creating a two-way bridge between SCDS and the wider community including AUB's faculties, departments, and entities. Through this bridge, the CMA CGM Artificial Intelligence and Insights Institute enables stakeholders including faculty and students to translate artificial intelligence, data science, and knowledge automation into research excellence, pedagogic innovation, and impactful real-world applications.
The Research Computing Center (RCC) is the School’s institutional platform for research computing and scientific infrastructure. Here one develops, operates, and federates the computational resources that enable modern research across AUB in strong partnership with the IT department. This includes high-performance computing, artificial intelligence workloads, advanced analytics, cloud and edge resources, and research software services. The mission is to provide researchers with the expertise, infrastructure, and operational support required to transform computational methods into scientific discovery while fostering a community of practice that connects faculty, students, and staff across disciplines.
The Data MakerSpace (DMS) is AUB’s collaborative environment for curating data into impactful knowledge and insight. Housed within SCDS, DMS brings together researchers, students, practitioners, and partners to curate, steward, analyze, visualize, and responsibly share data across domains ranging from science and engineering to medicine, agriculture, health, humanities, and the social sciences. It supports the full lifecycle of data-driven inquiry through shared expertise, training, governance, tooling, and community engagement while promoting reproducibility, data literacy, responsible innovation, and intellectual property respect. DMS is both a gateway to AUB's emerging research data ecosystem and a catalyst for interdisciplinary collaboration around data as a strategic institutional asset.
