Saint Theresa Catholic School (STCS) is a Catholic classical school in the Archdiocese of Galveston-Houston serving students in Pre-Kindergarten through 8th Grade. STCS is a member of the Institute for Catholic Liberal Education and has been named a 2020 National Blue Ribbon School. The school is fully committed to providing an education that unites the wisdom of the classical tradition with a firm foundation in Catholic faith and morals. Located in Sugar Land, Texas, Saint Theresa Catholic School offers a rigorous liberal arts program with a strong emphasis on Latin, the study of Western Civilization, and the fine arts. General Position Summary:
Under the supervision of the Head of School and the Office Manager, the School Nurse is responsible for supporting the health and well-being of students and maintaining health services that contribute to a safe and healthy school environment.
The Nurse provides care for students who become ill or injured during the school day, administers medications in accordance with school policy, and maintains student health records and documentation. Through attentive care and professional judgment, the School Nurse helps ensure that students are able to participate safely and fully in the life of the school.
The Nurse coordinates health-related procedures, assists in implementing emergency preparedness and safety protocols, and communicates with parents, faculty, and administration regarding student health matters and school health procedures.
In keeping with the principles of Catholic classical education, the Nurse supports the mission of Saint Theresa Catholic School by promoting respect for the dignity of every human person and encouraging responsible care of the body as a gift from God.
The Nurse has decision-making responsibilities within essential job functions in keeping with school policies.
The position is hired and evaluated by the Head of School.
Essential Job Functions:
- Support and uphold the mission, philosophy, and Catholic identity of Saint Theresa Catholic School and the Archdiocese of Galveston-Houston
- Live a life consistent with Catholic values and Gospel principles
- Serve as a visible witness to the teachings of the Catholic Church through personal conduct and professional responsibilities
- Participate actively in the faith life of the school community
Student Health Services
- Serve as a welcoming and professional representative of the school to prospective families, current families, parishioners, and visitors
- Serve as the primary health advocate for students and assess student health needs
- Provide care for students experiencing illness or injury during the school day
- Serve as the primary point of contact for student health concerns during the school day and provide guidance to faculty and staff regarding student health needs and appropriate care procedures
- Provide health services within the scope of professional nursing practice and in accordance with school policies and applicable regulations
Medication Administration and Medical Care
- Administer medications to students in accordance with physician orders, parent authorization, and school policy
- Maintain accurate documentation of medications administered
- Ensure medications are stored, secured, and administered in accordance with school policy and applicable health regulations
- Support students with chronic health conditions including allergies, asthma, diabetes, and other medical needs
- Maintain and monitor student health care plans and emergency action plans as appropriate
Student Health Records and Compliance
- Maintain accurate and confidential student health records in accordance with school policy and applicable regulations
- Ensure student immunization records comply with Texas state requirements
- Collect and maintain health documentation necessary for student enrollment and attendance
- Complete required health reports and documentation as required by the Archdiocese or applicable authorities
Health Screenings and Disease Prevention
- Coordinate and conduct required student health screenings including vision, hearing, spinal, and Acanthosis Nigricans screenings as required by Texas law
- Communicate screening results and follow-up recommendations to parents
- Assist in communicable disease monitoring and provide appropriate guidance to families
Communication and Coordination of Care
- Communicate with parents regarding student illness, injury, or health concerns during the school day
- Provide guidance to students and parents regarding student health and wellness
- Coordinate with faculty and staff regarding student health needs and medical alerts
- Coordinate with the front office and administration regarding student health concerns and early dismissals due to illness
Emergency Preparedness and Safety
- Assist administration in maintaining emergency health procedures and preparedness for medical emergencies
- Assist administration in planning and participating in school emergency preparedness procedures and drills
- Support the implementation of the school's emergency operations procedures by providing medical guidance and assistance during drills or emergency situations
- Assist in planning for student health and safety during school events and field trips
Health Office Operations
- Maintain appropriate medical supplies and equipment necessary to operate the school health office
- Maintain a clean, organized, and well-equipped health office
- Maintain a work schedule that maximizes availability to the school, students, and staff

- Respond to messages and requests in a timely and professional manner
- Demonstrate compassion and attentiveness when responding to student health needs
- Participate in school liturgies, parish events, and activities essential to the life of the school community
- Engage in ongoing professional learning related to school health practices and student wellness
- Grow in personal faith life through continued study, prayer, reflection, and participation in faith formation opportunities
- Participate fully in faculty meetings, professional development, committees, and assigned school initiatives
- Adhere to all school and Archdiocesan policies including confidentiality, code of conduct, and professional expectations
- Demonstrate professionalism in conduct, demeanor, and work habits
Additional Duties
- Assist with student supervision when needed
- Support school safety procedures and emergency preparedness
- Assist administration in maintaining a safe and healthy school environment
- Perform all other related duties as assigned by the Office Manager, Head of School or designee
Supervision Given and/or Received:
- Reports directly to the Head of School
- Works under the daily operational supervision of the Office Manager
Internal Contacts:
- Effectively communicates with administration, faculty, and school staff.
External Contacts:
- Effectively communicates with parents, healthcare providers, local health agencies as needed, as well as other schools, churches and employees throughout the Archdiocese.
Working Conditions and/or Physical Requirements:
- Required to work a full school day in a standard school environment
- Required to manage situations involving student illness or injury
- Required to work in standard office and school environments
- Required to occasionally lift, carry, or move materials or equipment weighing up to approximately 35 pounds
- Required to sit, stand, bend, reach, hear, see, and speak on a daily basis
- Required to perform repetitive tasks such as computer keyboarding, writing, and reading
- Required to monitor students in a variety of locations including those with noise, activity, and inclement weather
Travel Requirements:
- No travel required other than occasional professional meetings or school events
Education and Experience Preferred:
- Registered Nurse (RN) or Licensed Vocational Nurse (LVN) licensed to practice in the state of Texas
- Certification in CPR/AED and First Aid required
- Certification as a state vision, hearing, spinal, and Acanthosis Nigricans screener as required by Texas law
- Experience working in pediatric health, school health, or a related healthcare field preferred
- Meets the minimum requirements for position as set forth by the Archdiocese and TCCED
Knowledge and Skills Preferred:
- Knowledge of the basic teachings of the Catholic Church
- Knowledge of student health services and school health practices
- Knowledge of health screenings required by Texas law
- Ability to communicate effectively in both written and verbal form
- Ability to maintain confidentiality and professionalism
- Ability to organize and maintain accurate records
- Ability to manage multiple tasks simultaneously
- Skill in job-appropriate technology and health record systems
