Salary: $26.62-$39.93/hour (Depending on licensure, education and experience)

Schedule: Mondays-Fridays either 4-10 hour shifts or 5- 8 hour shifts (some flexible scheduling of days/hours available). On-call triage paid duties as assigned.

Children’s Home Society of South Dakota is seeking a Full Time Registered Nurse to provide trauma-informed care through the nursing perspective to children in residential treatment, shelter care, and survivors of domestic violence. What You’ll Do:

General Tasks for Residential Environment:

  • Assessment, monitor and treatment of medical needs of the children on campus.
  • Collect vitals as needed.
  • Act as a liaison between staff and physicians.
  • Medication administration and management:
    • Ordering medications.
    • Review medications received for accuracy with physician’s orders.
    • Training medications aides.
    • Ensuring unit medication charts are neat and orderly.
    • Packing medications for off-campus events and home visits.
    • Medication destruction.
  • Provide education to the children on varies health related topics.
  • Review records prior to admissions.
  • Complete admissions, transfers and discharges.
  • Accompany children to medical appointments as needed.
  • Provide training for staff on medical topics and CPR as needed.
  • On-call responsibilities as needed.

General Tasks for Shelter for Family Safety Environment:

  • Assessment, monitor and treatment of medical needs of the children in Youth Care.
  • Serve as a ‘go-to’ person for general medical questions for staff and clients at the Shelter.
  • Initial assessment for children in Youth Care.
  • Coordinate medical care for children in Youth Care.
  • Ensure documentation and records are complete for files of children in Youth Care.
  • Create a working relationship with the Medical Director to ensure standing orders and follow-up care are provided to the children in Youth Care.
  • Medication administration and management:
    • Ordering medications if needed.
    • Review medications received for accuracy with physician’s orders.
    • Training medications aides.
    • Ensuring medication cart is neat and orderly.
    • Packing medications for off-campus events and home visits.
    • Medication destruction.
    • Provide medication education to adults in Shelter.
  • Assessment of injuries due to abuse to determine if further medical care is needed.
  • Complete medical related portion of intakes and departures, as needed.
  • Schedule and accompany children in Youth Care to medical appointments as needed.
  • Provide training for staff on medical topics and CPR as needed.
  • On-call responsibilities as needed.

Requirements

Education:

  • Minimum Associates Degree in Nursing (ADN) required.
  • Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) strongly preferred.

Experience:

  • Minimum of one year of professional nursing experience is required.
  • Previous experience working with underserved populations, pediatrics, assessments and case management preferred.

Licensure:

  • Must possess and maintain a valid, unencumbered RN nursing license in the State of South Dakota.
  • Basic Life Support (BLS) certification is required (can be obtained within six months of hire).
  • Valid driver’s license required.

Physical Demands and Work Environment:

Residential environment focused on care of children with behavioral issues. Shelter environment focused on care of individuals in crisis situations. While performing the duties of this job, the employee must be able to physically restrain a child in ways taught by the Agency while being able to verbally communicate with the child and other staff. The employee is regularly required to bend and sit on the floor. The employee must regularly lift and/or move up to 10 pounds and occasionally lift and/or move up to 50 pounds.
