
AKU- Department of Paediatrics & Child Health is seeking a Fulltime Faculty, Paediatric Nephrologist The Job holder will undertake clinical and educational functions under the supervision of the Section Head, under whom he/she would be deployed. In this role, the incumbent will admit, consult, and undertake the diagnosis and treatment of patients admitted under the University team or by private admitting doctors. He/she may prescribe or request certain tests or perform certain procedures without supervision but should consult and involve other relevant specialties for more complex diagnostic or management issues. As the admitting doctor, the Paediatric Nephrologist ultimately determines what direct management is provided to patients admitted under Him / Her and provides appropriate supervision for all cadres of doctors and nurses involved in care.
Responsibilities
The incumbent will:
Review and examine patients consistently by performing such duties as taking case histories, conducting physical examinations, and ordering diagnostic laboratory and radiology studies.
Conduct daily ward rounds and regularly monitor patients’ progress, participate in clinics and provide third on call services for the Children’s Ward, New Born unit and Paediatric casualty.
When necessary, carry out privileged and potentially life-saving emergency medical procedures.
Participate in establishing various planning parameters for addressing referral cases received at AKUH.
Educate patients on wellness, prevention and early detection of risk factors for diseases.
Initiate timely discussions with relevant consultants/departments to arrive at the best treatment plans for specialized cases.
Take on the role of teaching and supervising residents, Senior House Officers and other clinical staff including participating in developing and reviewing the syllabus for assigned teaching modules
Collaborate with colleagues to enable integration of clinical research activities, shared knowledge, institutional quality improvement and patient wellness activities.
Requirements
The ideal candidate should:
Hold a Master of Medicine (MMed) in Paediatrics
Possess a Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery (MBChB) or an equivalent qualification
Have certified and verifiable training in Nephrology from a recognized university
Demonstrate valid certification in Emergency Paediatric Life Support (EPALS)
Be registered with the Kenya Medical Practitioners and Dentists Council
Exhibit proficiency and competence in handling hospital equipment
Possess strong communication and interpersonal skills
