Job Description

Alternatively, Grant Thornton

At Grant Thornton we do things differently - looking to the future, driving ambitious growth and pioneering positive change in our industry. Providing audit, tax and advisory services, we empower clients through strategic insight, curiosity, and genuine partnership. And we empower our people with real opportunity, an inclusive culture and work life balance. A true alternative.

With over 5,000 people in the UK, and a presence in 150 global markets, we're on an ambitious journey, from great to exceptional, and we need the best people to help us achieve our potential. And with that comes the opportunity to help redefine what our industry looks like, and what you want from your career.

Grant Thornton’s Financial Services Tax team provides tax advisory, transactions and compliance services to clients in the Financial Services market across Wealth and Asset Management, Banking and Capital Market and Insurance sectors.

Our Wealth and Asset Management team is one of the fastest growing areas of Grant Thornton’s Financial Services Tax practice. We have ambitious growth plans and are looking for an experienced, self-motivated and enthusiastic Director with a strong UK corporation tax and transactions background to work within this team in London.

The team’s client portfolio spans the breadth of the Wealth and Asset Management sector, serving traditional asset managers, financial services institutions, alternative funds asset managers across all asset classes including private equity, private credit, venture capital, hedge funds, real estate and infrastructure, wealth managers, UK pension funds, and global institutional investors. We combine technical expertise with a commercial approach, to build a strong trusted adviser relationship with our clients. The wealth and asset management industry is dynamic, technically demanding and global, giving you the opportunity to work on domestic and international structuring, transactions and UK tax compliance and advisory matters, in addition to working with the wider Grant Thornton International network and the national tax practice which offers specialised services in areas such as innovation tax, employment taxes, VAT, and real estate, which can be leveraged to support clients' growth journeys.

Part of the role will focus on working alongside the partner group in building out the practice, building strong client relationships within the current and target client base. Working in practice means that the job is, by its nature, different every day and we want someone who is actively looking for this challenge. An agile approach to working with different projects and people is therefore essential.

We’re happy to talk flexible working and consider reduced hours and job shares, we’ll support you to balance your work and life.

A look into the role

As a Director, you’ll be the senior technical expert for our asset management clients covering UK and international tax advisory, fund structuring, transactions, governance and compliance. You’ll lead major cross‑border projects, develop a high‑value portfolio and act as a trusted adviser to CFOs, Heads of Tax and senior industry stakeholders.

You’ll play a pivotal role in growing the practice: originating opportunities, leading on pitches, shaping our proposition, and collaborating across Financial Services and our international network to deliver exceptional solutions. You’ll also be an inspirational leader, developing and mentoring our talented team and fostering a culture of technical excellence and high performance.

Knowing you’re right for us

Joining us as a Financial Services Tax Associate Director the minimum criteria you’ll need is a professional qualification (CTA / ACA / ACCA or equivalent), and to be confident managing a portfolio of clients.

It would be great if you also had some of the following skills, but don’t worry if you don’t tick every box, we’ll help you develop along the way.

  • Extensive UK corporate tax experience within financial services, with strong exposure to asset managers, investment funds or alternative investment structures.
  • Advanced technical capability, including a strong understanding of hybrid and other mismatch rules, interest deductibility, controlled foreign companies, Pillar 2, investment fund tax regimes and wider international tax considerations.
  • Proven leadership of complex, multi‑jurisdictional advisory projects, demonstrating accountability, excellent stakeholder management and consistent delivery under pressure.
  • A commercial mindset and strong business development skills, with evidence of originating new work, growing accounts and building long‑term client relationships at senior levels.
  • Exceptional communication and influencing skills, with the confidence to advise C-suite stakeholders and articulate complex tax matters clearly and credibly.
  • Experience shaping and developing high‑performing teams, including coaching, mentoring and supporting career progression.
  • Strong analytical and technology skills, with familiarity with tax compliance and reporting tools such as Alphatax, CCH, Power BI and wider data‑led solutions.

Knowing we’re right for you

Embracing uniqueness, the culture at Grant Thornton thrives on the contributions of all our people, we never settle for what is easy, we look beyond to deliver the right thing, for everyone. Building an inclusive culture, where we value difference and respect our colleagues helps our people to perform at the best of their ability and realise their potential.

Our open and accessible culture means you’ll interact with leaders who are interested in you and everything you bring to our firm. The things that set you apart, we value them. That’s why we give you the freedom to bring your whole self to work and pursue your passions inside and outside of work.

Beyond the job

Life is more than work. The things you do, and the people you’re with outside of work matter, that’s why we’re happy to look at flexible working options for all our roles, and we’ll always do our best to keep your work and life in balance.

The impact you can make here will go far beyond your day job. From secondments, to fundraising for local charities, or investing in entrepreneurs in the developing world, you’ll be giving back to society. It’s that drive to do the right thing that runs through our every move, grounded in our firm’s values – purposefully driven, actively curious and candid but kind.
