Responsibilities:

This role expect you to investigate the freshwater ecosystems within tropical peatland forests, contributing to our understanding of these unique environments with detail:

1. Conduct comprehensive surveys and assessments of freshwater ecosystems in tropical peatland forests, focusing on aquatic flora and fauna, including populations and diversity.

2. Collect and analyse water quality data, including parameters to assess the health of freshwater habitats and their suitability for fish and other aquatic life. 3. Design and implement field experiments to study the impact of environmental factors on freshwater ecosystems within the RER project area, with a focus on potential impacts on aquatic populations.

4. Establish and maintain a working relationship with the local fishing community operating inside and adjacent to RER.

5. Develop and deliver educational program on sustainable fishing practices.

6. Monitor and assess fishing activities impacts including aquatic fauna population health, species composition, potential overfishing concerns and other impacts.

7. Analyse the utilisation of Non-Timber Forest Products (NTFPs) by fishers, including the types of fish caught, fishing gear used (net sizes, etc.), and bycatch.

8. Collaborate with interdisciplinary teams (including social scientists and community engagement specialists) to integrate freshwater research findings, fishing community data, and NTFP utilization analysis into the broader ecological and socio-economic context of tropical peatland forests.

9. Develop and maintain databases for organizing and managing aquatic research data, ensuring accuracy and accessibility for the research team.

10. Provide expertise in identifying freshwater species and contribute to the overall biodiversity assessment of the RER project, with a focus on fish species. 11. Communicate research findings through reports, presentations, and scientific publications, contributing to the knowledge base in freshwater ecology, fisheries management, and community-based conservation.

12. Stay updated on relevant scientific literature and advancements in freshwater ecology, fisheries science, and community-based natural resource management to inform research methodologies and enhance project outcomes.

Minimum Requirements:

  • Bachelor degree (B.Sc.) in Biology, Aquatic Ecology, Fisheries Science, or a related field. Master Degree holder will have a preference.

  • Proven experience (≥ 3 years) in conducting field research on freshwater ecosystems, preferably in tropical environments, and experience working with fishing communities.

  • Strong skills in species identification, water quality analysis, experimental design, and community engagement.

  • Proficiency in data management and statistical analysis using relevant software.

  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to convey complex scientific concepts to diverse audiences, including local communities.

  • Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively in a multidisciplinary research team and build rapport with diverse stakeholders.

  • Willingness to work in challenging field conditions and travel as needed for data collection and community engagement activities.

Preferably:

  • Experience with participatory research methods and community-based conservation initiatives

  • Familiarity with Indonesian fisheries regulations and management practices

  • Fluency in Bahasa Indonesia and English
