We are seeking a Firmware Engineer specializing in FPGA development and embedded real‑time control, with strong skills in digital design and low‑level embedded software. In this role, you will design the firmware and control systems that interface tightly with power electronics, mixed‑signal ASICs and advanced imaging hardware used across CT, MR, and Ultrasound platforms. Familiarity with power electronics and/or ASIC RTL design is a strong plus.

Roles and Responsibilities

As part of a multidisciplinary team, you will contribute to the planning, development, and transition of embedded control technologies from concept to product. You will:

Embedded Firmware & Real‑Time Control (Primary Focus)

  • Implement and test signal processing, control and data interfaces between FPGAs, processors, custom ASICs and imaging subsystems.
  • Design FPGAs and custom ASICs using VHDL/Verilog, perform timing analysis and timing closure using tools such as QuestaSim, Quartus, Xcelium.
  • Design and implement real-time embedded firmware in C/C++ for control, configuration, calibration, and diagnostics of mixed‑signal ASICs and custom hardware modules.
  • Develop deterministic, low‑latency control loops and high‑speed data acquisition routines for advanced imaging applications.
  • Integrate embedded firmware with FPGA or SoC platforms, supporting tight hardware/software co‑design.
  • Interface with sensors, analog front ends, actuators, RF subsystems, and other hardware components.
  • Implement and optimize real‑time communication protocols (SPI, I²C, UART, Ethernet, etc.).

Software Integration & System Control

  • Partner with embedded software teams to define register maps, communication layers, drivers, and system-level behavior.
  • Develop driver‑level software, scripts, and automation tools to enable hardware bring‑up, system validation, and production test.
  • Create simulation and modeling frameworks to verify real‑time control algorithms.

Cross-Functional Collaboration & Innovation

  • Work closely with electrical engineers, ASIC designers, systems engineers, and software teams.
  • Communicate technical results through documentation, reports, and presentations.
  • Track industry trends in embedded systems, real‑time control, FPGAs, and ASIC technologies.
  • Contribute to internal R&D proposals and collaborative programs with government agencies.

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Computer Science, or related field.
  • Strong fundamentals in synchronous digital design, floor-planning, synthesizable RTL code, timing analysis and closure, developing embedded firmware in C/C++, including register-level programming and hardware abstraction layers.
  • Experience with FPGA development, or SoC platforms (e.g., Altera, Xilinx, Zynq)
  • Experience with verification tools (Quartus, QuestaSim) and STA workflows.
  • Experience with Verilog, VHDL for understanding hardware–firmware interaction.
  • Must work onsite in Niskayuna, NY Tuesday–Thursday (hybrid schedule).

Desired Characteristics

  • PhD in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, or related field.
  • Familiarity with ASIC digital design flows
  • Familiarity with power electronics control
  • Familiarity with MATLAB/Simulink for modeling or algorithm development.
  • Background in high‑reliability industries (medical, aerospace, defense).
  • Strong problem-solving ability, communication skills, and ability to work in cross-functional teams

For U.S. based positions only, the pay range for this position is $120,000.00-$180,000.00 Annual. It is not typical for an individual to be hired at or near the top of the pay range and compensation decisions are dependent on the facts and circumstances of each case.
