Founding Commercial Lines Underwriter

Location: New York City Area, Hybrid, Remote

Compensation: $200K base + meaningful performance/profit-sharing upside

The Opportunity

We are building a new commercial insurance brokerage backed by an established real estate portfolio, strong business relationships, and the resources to build it properly.

The business opportunity is already there.

What we need is an experienced commercial insurance professional who can become the technical backbone of the brokerage.

This is not a traditional underwriting seat where you inherit an established book, department, and process. You will help build the insurance operation from the beginning: working directly on accounts, determining how risks should be approached, navigating carriers and coverage, and establishing the underwriting processes the company will eventually scale around.

The initial focus will be commercial real estate and construction.

Ownership will focus heavily on relationships, business development, and growing the client base. You will bring the commercial insurance knowledge and underwriting judgment required to turn those opportunities into well-structured, successfully placed business.

What You'll Own

• Take ownership of commercial accounts from initial risk review through quoting, carrier negotiation, proposal, binding, and renewal.
• Serve as the internal insurance expert for real estate, construction, and related commercial risks.
• Determine the right markets, coverage structure, and approach for accounts rather than simply processing submissions.
• Build practical underwriting, placement, renewal, and servicing processes as the brokerage grows.
• Solve difficult account issues involving carriers, coverage, audits, lenders, renewals, and changing risk requirements.
• Help train future team members and establish the technical standards the brokerage will operate around.

What We're Looking For

• Strong commercial lines insurance experience within a brokerage or agency environment.
• Proven ability to independently handle commercial accounts rather than working only on one piece of the process.
• Experience quoting, marketing, negotiating, binding, and renewing commercial policies.
• Strong understanding of carriers, coverage, risk, and how to structure an account.
• Meaningful real estate, construction, property, contractor, or related commercial account experience strongly preferred.
• Comfortable remaining hands-on while helping build processes and eventually develop a team.

We are interested in someone who has developed real insurance judgment, can independently move an account from opportunity to bound policy, and is ready for more ownership than their current company can offer.

You do not need to already run a large department.

You do need to know commercial insurance well enough that other people rely on your judgment.
