Are you a strategic thinker with a passion for retail design, commercial execution, and innovation? As the Format Development Manager, you will be the driving force that translates high-level retail brand strategies into living, breathing store formats and concepts.

Reporting into the Head of Design - Format Development, this is an influential, highly collaborative role situated within our Design Leadership Team (DLT). While you won’t have direct reports, you will utilise your exceptional horizontal leadership and cross-functional influencing skills to manage a complex, high-volume program of work. From the initial concept brief to trials, post-implementation reviews, and fleet-wide standardisation you will own the end-to-end journey.

Here is a taster of what you can expect in this role:

  • Translate brand and functional strategies into inspiring, brand-appropriate new formats, concept stores, and trial initiatives.
  • Manage and track a complex program of concurrent store format projects, driving the scope, budget, business cases, and delivery timelines.
  • Act as the central conduit connecting Marketing, Merchandise, Space & Range, Operations, Property, Finance and Safety to ensure total alignment from brief to execution.
  • Lead cross-functional workshops, proof-of-concepts (POCs), and trials to ideate innovative, customer-focused solutions centered around cost-optimisation and safety.
  • Interrogate the financial performance of new formats and initiatives in partnership with Format Operations to continuously unlock new opportunities.
  • Develop Implementation Guidelines and Inclusion Matrices to smoothly transition successful trials into scalable brand toolkits.

Qualifications

We are looking for a pragmatic, curious, and resilient leader who thrives in complex, fast-paced retail environments.

Essential:

  • Tertiary qualifications in Business/Commerce, Design, Construction, or a related discipline.
  • A proven track background intersecting design, commercial buying, marketing, and/or retail operations.
  • Outstanding horizontal leadership capability, with the ability to influence senior executives, cross-functional working groups, and external agencies.
  • Strong financial literacy with the ability to build business cases and interrogate retail data.

Desirable:

  • Prior experience in a similar retail format development or design strategy role.
  • Robust project management experience within structured PMO frameworks.
