Perform basic tree trimming, pruning, topping and removal; assist in digging, balling and burlapping of plants and trees for transplanting and operate powered and non-powered hand tools.

This is a Training and Certification Program position.

Examples of duties

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS: Essential functions may include but are not limited to the functions listed below. Must be able to perform the essential functions of the job with or without a reasonable accommodation.

  1. Prunes trees and shrubs using hand tools or power equipment; climb trees using proper safety equipment including ropes and belts.
  2. Dig, ball and burlap trees or shrubs for transplanting using proper soil preparation techniques and methods; plant nursery stock; water plants manually as directed.
  3. Operate and maintain light and medium size trucks; transport tools, materials and equipment to and from job sites.
  4. Under licensed supervision, assist with the preparation and mixing of pesticides and herbicides and apply in accordance with existing State regulations to control insects, pests and unwanted plant growth.
  5. Operate and perform preventive maintenance of powered and non-powered and other tools.
  6. Assist with tree brush removal and disposal including clean-up of the area.
  7. Adhere to safe work practices and procedures.

SUPPLEMENTAL FUNCTIONS:

  1. Respond to public inquiries in a courteous manner; provide information within the area of assignment; resolve complaints in an efficient and timely manner.
  2. Perform related duties and responsibilities as required.

Qualifications

High school diploma or GED; and

One (1) year of general grounds maintenance, forestry or nursery experience preferred.

ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS:
Possession of a valid New Mexico Driver's License or the ability to obtain by date of hire.
Possession of a City Operator's Permit (COP) within six (6) months from date of hire.
Possession of a Forestry Worker Certificate, Level I Certificate within ninety (90) days from date of hire.

Supplemental information

Environmental:
Field environment; exposure to inclement weather conditions; work around construction equipment.

Physical:
Essential and supplemental functions require maintaining physical condition necessary for standing and walking for prolonged periods of time; moderate to heavy lifting and carrying; operating motorized equipment and vehicles.
