Become a Forest Maintenance Worker with the Department of Conservation and Natural Resources and help protect Pennsylvania’s wild places! This position offers meaningful outdoor work that directly supports forest roads, trails and facilities. You will build confidence as you handle tools, equipment and new challenges. Your contributions will help ensure that visitors can enjoy the forest in a clean, safe and well-maintained setting.


Examples of duties

This position supports the upkeep and safety of State Forest roads, facilities, and recreation areas while assisting with fire protection activities. The work involves semi-skilled tasks that help preserve forest resources and maintain visitor access. As a Forest Maintenance Worker, you will perform the following duties:

  • Facility Upkeep: Maintain and repair buildings, equipment, and signs across State Forest properties
  • Road Care: Clear culverts and ditches, maintain driving surfaces, and remove fallen trees
  • Trail Support: Repaint blazes, remove windfalls, and maintain water diversion controls on forest trails
  • Equipment Operation: Handle chainsaws, tractors, skid steers, and shop tools for maintenance tasks
  • Recreation Areas: Mow lawns, collect trash, clean restrooms, and repair picnic facilities
  • Fire Assistance: Support fire suppression, prevention, pre-suppression, and prescribed fire activities

Work Schedule and Additional Information:

  • This is a seasonal, full-time position with no healthcare benefits. There is not an option to buy into health care benefits. The season runs from approximately March 2026 until November 2026 at which time the employee will be placed on leave without pay. The employee will automatically be returned to employment March 2027.
  • Work hours are 7:00 AM to 5:00 PM, Monday - Wednesday and 7:00 AM to 4:30 PM on Thursday, with a 30-minute lunch.
  • Telework: You will not have the option to telework in this position.

Qualifications

QUALIFICATIONS

Minimum Experience and Training Requirements:

  • One year of experience in laboring work including the use of tools and equipment used in maintenance or construction; or
  • An equivalent combination of experience and training.

Conditions of Employment:

  • This position requires possession of a valid PA non-commercial Class C driver’s license or equivalent.
