Job
Summary: The Food Service Worker/Custodian (FSWC) coordinates with the school cafeteria personnel for the delivery of meals and snacks to the Head Start classroom food preparation area in compliance with School Lunch Program rules and regulations. The FSWC implements Head Start and Early Head Start food service standards for delivery of meals and snacks to the classroom that comply with agency best practices, Child and Adult Care Food Program (CACFP), Bureau of Child Care Licensure, and County Food Establishment requirements. The FSWC ensures the center (classroom, restrooms, and playground) is clean and free of any dangerous or unsafe items prior to children’s arrival. The FSWC observes, trains, and works cooperatively with other food service and child development staff. Must have strong communication, flexibility, and be able to work in a fast-paced, highly regulated environment.

Minimum
Qualifications:
- Possess a High School Diploma or GED
- Must be 18 years of age.
- Possess a valid Arizona driver's license and excellent driving record.
- Prior experience in one or more of the following food service activities: direct responsibility for preparing nutritious meals, scheduling meals, proper food handling and storage, food inventory, food ordering, and working with the Child and Adult Care Food Program requirements.
- Must be able to read, write, speak, and understand English.
- Submit a current AZ Department of Public Safety Level One Fingerprint Clearance Card prior to start date.

- Must be able to travel to and from various sites in private vehicle as needed.
- Provide proof of immunizations: MMR (Measles, Mumps, Rubella), Tdap (adult Tetanus, Diphtheria, Pertussis), and a clear Tuberculosis Self-Assessment.
- Able to pass a company paid physical exam prior to starting work.
- Able to pass a criminal background check.
- Must be able to prove the right to work in the USA by providing appropriate documents to complete the Federal I-9 form.
- Must possess or have the ability to possess and keep current certification in First Aid Training/CPR training including Infants and Children.
- Must be able to obtain the State of Arizona Food Safety Manager Certification and Food Handlers Class within one month of employment.

Food Service Responsibilities:
- Maintain area in classrooms used for food preparation to meet county sanitation requirements.
- Clean carts and work surfaces as required.
- Make efficient use of available space and utensils. Keeps surfaces free of grease and clutter.
- Demonstrate sanitary practices in relation to preparation of food and personal hygiene.
- Use proper methods in storing and holding foods at required temperatures.
- Receive food for each meal from the school cafeteria using designated food transporter and return food transporter back to the cafeteria per agreement, if applicable.
- Prepare food for serving in portion sizes and quantities that meet the School Lunch Program standards.
- Work within an established classroom schedule to ensure that food carts and meals are ready at required times.
- Post menus and inform staff of changes.
- Supply food for nutritional experiences in the classroom.
- Provide nutrition information and/or nutrition experiences for parents; prepare nutritional snacks for parent activities.
Custodial Responsibilities:
- Clean the classroom, restroom, and office areas to ensure the areas are free of dirt, odor, insects, and vermin. Clean and inspect the playground to ensure the playground is free of dangerous objects, debris, and weeds. Complete according to Center Cleaning Checklists.
- Notify supervisor of maintenance needs and/or safety hazards related to all areas of the center. Call Work Request system as requested.
- Move and store classroom furniture when required by center needs; assist teaching staff with classroom breakdown and setup.
- Store hazardous or dangerous items in a locked storage area that is inaccessible to children.
- Organize storage areas to ensure accurate inventory of cleaning supplies and materials.
- Take out scheduled playground equipment before outdoor playtime begins and stores after outdoor playtime is completed.
- Ensure soft surfacing is maintained in required areas including raking artificial turf or sand on a regular basis.
- Water down hot surfaces when season requires it, including water of sand area for child play.
- Ensure drinking water is available and accessible to children during outdoor playtime.
- Use caution tape to designate unsafe areas to ensure children are not allowed in the area.
- Actively participate in closedown cleaning process.
- Ensure the facility is secured at the end of the day.
- Where applicable communicate with custodian or custodian/driver to minimize duplicate ordering, reporting, or cleaning.
Supervision:
- Identify self-growth, development goals, and strategies for achievement with support and input from supervisor.
- Commit and participate in consistent and planned meetings with supervisors to further professional growth by seeking feedback, reflecting on and assessing own practice, and taking advantage of opportunities to improve skills and knowledge.
Recordkeeping, Monitoring and Reporting:
- Maintain daily record of number of meals served by type, and submit to school cafeteria on a daily basis as required. Sign bills and submit to Food Service Coordinator
- Maintain Daily Inventory of food and food service supplies.
- Prepare supply requests and submit them to supervisor to order necessary cleaning supplies.
- Complete and submit kitchen/disposable supplies order forms used in food services to Procurement.
Leadership, Management and Teamwork:
- Actively participate in the center team and contribute to the decision-making process for compliance, strategic initiatives, professional development, budget, governance, and agency self-assessment
- Collaborate with school food service personnel to ensure food service implementation.
- Participate in developing Accommodation /Special Care Plans for children requiring special diets whenever requested by the Registered Dietician.
- Train and support volunteers, substitutes and center staff with food service procedures and routines.
- Work cooperatively with the center team and communicate need to know information on a daily basis.
