The Andrew B. Ferrari Argus House is seeking a Food Service Coordinator to join our team! Argus House, operated by the Arlington County Juvenile and Domestic Relations District Court, is a community-based group home that serves middle- and high-school-aged adolescents and young adults who are transitioning to independence. Our mission is to offer a behavioral and therapeutic residential program that fosters growth, while keeping clients close to their communities and away from the criminal justice system. A Food Service Coordinator is essential as proper meal planning, nutrition management, and daily family-style meals support residents’ physical health, emotional well-being, and development of positive social skills.

Specific duties include:

  • Developing and following nutritious weekly meal menus that are appetizing for the client population;

  • Planning, preparing, and serving daily meals and snacks for youth and staff in a residential group home setting (up to 25-30 people);

  • Monitoring food quality, portion control, and proper food handling procedures;

  • Maintaining records related to food inventory, meal counts, temperatures and sanitation inspections;

  • Ensuring a clean, safe, and sanitary kitchen environment in accordance with Virginia and Arlington County health and safety regulations;

  • Purchasing inventory and properly store food and kitchen supplies within budget guidelines

  • Coordinating with residential staff regarding residents’ dietary needs, behaviors, and schedules; and

  • Promoting positive mealtime experiences and modeling appropriate behaviors, communication, and healthy eating habits for youth

The ideal candidate will have the following:

  • Experience in meal planning, food preparation, inventory management and maintaining food safety standards in residential, school, healthcare or group home settings;

  • Ability to provide nutritious meals, accommodate dietary needs, manage kitchen operations efficiently; and

  • Ability to work collaboratively with staff and residents in a supportive environment.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • High school diploma, GED or equivalent; and

  • One to three years of experience in the preparation, cooking, and serving of meals according to an established menu.

Substitution(s): College coursework in a human services or related field may be substituted for related work experience on a year for year basis.

Licenses/Certifications: ServSafe Certification.

Desirable Qualifications: Preference may be given to applicants with experience in one or more of the following:

  • Working with adolescents;

  • Working in a group home licensed by the Virginia Department of Juvenile Justice; and/or
  • Using Microsoft Word, Outlook etc.

Special Requirements

  • Background Check: A pre-employment criminal record check will be conducted to include National Crime Information Center (NCIC) check, Virginia Criminal Information Network (VCIN) background check. FBI fingerprints, and a Virginia Department of Social Services Child Protective Services Central Registry Search.

  • Driver's License: Applicant must possess, or obtain by time of appointment, a valid driver’s license, and must provide or authorize Arlington County to obtain a copy of official driving record. Any offer of employment may be contingent upon favorable review of the applicant’s driving record. Alternatively, the applicant must have the ability and willingness to use alternative methods of transportation to perform assigned duties and responsibilities at locations other than the primary worksite.

  • Required Training: Must attend and complete the Certified Food Manager course within the first month of hire.
  • Health Requirements: Must provide negative TB results at time of hire.

Additional Information

Work hours: This is a part-time permanent position,20 hours a weekon-site Monday through Friday. Generally, between the hours of 1:30- 5:30 pm, with minor changes based on special activities, resident schedules, and the summer/school break schedules. The schedule listed is subject to change at the discretion of the Group Home Manager.

Starting salary is commensurate with the qualifications and experience of the candidate selected.
