Position Purpose summary:

The Food Program Community Service Worker supports all food related programs at Boundless Vancouver through effective assistance in managing resources in the dietary envelope and is required to perform their duties in a manner consistent with the Salvation Army Boundless Vancouver core values, ensure neighbour safety, and demonstrate customer service excellence.

The job requires responsibility for assisting in planning, implementation and evaluation of programs and services provided to our neighbours. The Food Program Community Service Workeris passionate about food and food security, is highly organized, an effective multi-tasker, and a go-getter with the ability to work with minimum supervision.

TERM OF EMPLOYMENT:

  • Temporary Full Time – 35 hours/wk.

  • Monday – Friday,7:00am to 2:30pm

  • July 2nd,2026- August 28th, 2026

Applicants must meet program eligibility requirements, including age and legal status criteria.

RESPONSIBILITIESand Accountabilities:

  • Assist in planning and supervising volunteers for our Brunch, Food Market, Healthy Eating Kitchen, and other food related special events in addition to assisting in food preparation for such programs.
  • Networks with community partners for all special events and weekly programs and participates in weekly food procurement.
  • Utilizes food programming and resources to build a community of Hope.
  • Develops, recommends, implements, communicates regarding statistical information, records - training and orientation, policy and procedures for Food Programs in support of Boundless Vancouver’s mission, vision and values and in accordance with legislative and regulatory requirements, the Ministry of Health and professional standards of practice.
  • Responds to neighbour requests for specific food items, responds to complaints, follows up and documents as necessary.
  • Assists in inventory control and keeps accurate records of inventory.
  • Adheres to established departmental policies and procedures regarding quality assurance, fire safety, sanitation, environment and infection control and participates in OHS meetings.
  • Performs food handling, serving and cooking duties when required. 
  • Assists in developing assessments and surveys to evaluate existing programs and plans changes if necessary.

MANAGERIAL/TECHNICAL LEADERSHIP RESPONSIBILITY

Reports directly to theProgram Manager – Food Services

No direct reports to this role. May provide generalsupervision tovolunteersor students

May demonstrate work methods to new and current volunteers.

FINANCIAL AND MATERIALS MANAGEMENT:

  • May receive monetary or gift-in-kind donations and process to Operations Manager according to operating policies.

  • Material responsibility (proper handling/safekeeping ofdonations, some access to confidential information).

WORKING CONDITIONS:

Theincumbent’s work environment is typically in the food storage area and kitchen.

The incumbent works in generally agreeable conditions, with the following exceptions:

  • Dealing with angry and abusive people

  • Temperature variations

  • Equipment and general office noise

  • Frequent standing and lifting of objects up to 50lbs.

Exposure to Hazards:

The incumbent may be exposed to the risk of minor harm,injury,or illness due to:

  • Physical attacks by others

  • Exposure to infectious diseases

  • Other potentially dangerous situations

Precautionary measures:

The incumbent must take the following precautionary measures (in addition to health and safety rules):

  • Universal Precautions

  • Food Safe training

  • Non-violent Crisis Intervention training

  • Self-Care/Debriefing

  • First Aid Certification

  • Background check consentclear vulnerable sector screening

  • A clean drivers abstract

  • Completion of ourAbusePrevention Training andrequiredHealth and Safetytraining.

education and experience Qualifications:

Education, Qualifications and Certifications:

  • Highschool graduate with some community college training in a related field.

  • Class 5 driver’s licenseis an asset

  • Ability and willingness to undergo applicable screening and background checks successfully that are satisfactory to The Salvation Army, in its sole discretion (i.e., The Salvation Army Abuse Registry) and provide an original copy of a Background Check screening.

NOTE:  An alternative level of education and experience may be acceptable

Experienceand Skilled Knowledge Requirements:

  • Experience working with marginalized communities.

  • Experience working in a multi-cultural social services environment, an asset.

  • Experience with event planning, an asset.

  • Experience in customer service.

  • Current knowledge of issues and trends including best practices in the enhancement of quality of life and food security.

  • Demonstrated leadership ability and highly developed interpersonal, communication, multitasking, and time management skills.

  • Excellent written and verbal communicationskillsto establish and maintain positive relationships with community partners.

  • Able to work with a team consisting of staff and volunteers in a busy, fast-paced environment.

Skills and Capabilities:

  • Ability to adapt and prioritize many different tasks and initiatives.

  • Quick learner & self-starter.

  • Able to perform moderate lifting (60 lbs.) and physical labour for longperiods

  • Ability to utilize related equipment such as various word processing including MS Office applications and email.

  • Empathetic individual with the ability to work cooperatively, patiently, and effectively with others.

Compensation:

The target hiring range for this position is $21.28 to $26.60 with a maximum of $31.92.

Placement in the salary range will be based on factors such as market conditions, internal equity, and candidate experience, skills, and qualifications relevant to the role.
