A little more about your role …

WSP is looking for a Fluvial Geomorphologist /Hydromorphologist within the Catchment Science team with specialisms in fluvial geomorphology, Water Framework Directive (WFD), natural flood management (NFM), nature-based solutions (NbS), weir removal, river and catchment enhancement, and biodiversity net gain (BNG) for watercourses.

You will play a key role in delivering our growth strategy for Hydromorphology and provide mentoring and technical support to our growing team. This is an exciting career opportunity where you can shape your role to align your strengths to our growth strategy.

Some of your day-to-day responsibilities...

  • Undertaking fluvial geomorphology and WFD assessments for a diverse project portfolio
  • Contributing to the development and delivery of internal training material for fluvial geomorphology and watercourse BNG
  • Leading on and assisting in writing of proposals for our wide client-base
  • Undertaking watercourse BNG assessments and development of enhancements to achieve 10% net gain
  • Producing high quality reports, as well as experience in scheduling and budget management responsibilities.
  • Working collaboratively with our multi-disciplinary teams across the business
  • Contributing to business development for our hydromorphology service line

We are looking for experienced and enthusiastic, flexible self-starters who are capable of both independent work and working as part of a team. You will be a highly motivated, numerate candidate with excellent communication skills and have the ability to apply technical knowledge in analysing problems and finding solutions to new challenges.

Your Team

We have a rapidly growing hydromorphology team providing our technical expertise to a diverse client and project-base. Our work is currently expanding rapidly into the exciting BNG for Rivers and Streams area, where we are providing technical leadership in the delivery of the watercourse component of BNG. Our current portfolio of hydromorphology work includes:

  • Fluvial audits to inform catchment management options to improve river form and function
  • Erosion monitoring on active dynamic rivers
  • Sediment studies
  • Geomorphology and WFD assessment of flood alleviation schemes and major linear infrastructure projects
  • Exploring natural flood management and natural capital opportunities
  • Channel design for river diversions
  • Developing new methods for hydromorphology assessment.
  • We provide our technical services to a wide range of both internal and external Clients including Rail, Highways, Local Authority, Housing and Private Development sectors

What we will be looking for you to demonstrate …

  • Excellent reporting and communications skills
  • Strong professional experience and track record in fluvial geomorphology and WFD, including field survey planning, leading and coordinating large projects, and managing a dispersed team of surveyors.
  • Relevant degree (BSc or MSc) in an environmental science/geography or equivalent.
  • Project management experience including management of subcontractors and associates.
  • Experience in undertaking WFD assessments.
  • Full membership of CIWEM, CIEEM, RGS and ideally chartered for this grade is preferred but WSP will support and mentor candidates on their chartership journey.
  • Detailed specialist knowledge of one, or more, of the following would be advantageous:
    - River channel design;
    - Sediment sampling and analysis;
    - GIS skills;
    - BNG River Condition Assessment (RCA) and hold RCA accreditation desirable;
    - WFD;
    - Fluvial audit.
