Job Description

Audubon is seeking a Flow Measurement and Automation Specialist to support gas and liquid measurement projects in our Houston, Texas office. Under the technical direction and mentorship of an Automation Lead Engineer, this role will configure, program, integrate, test, and commission flow computers, flow meters, and associated control systems. The position combines office engineering support with hands-on shop and field work to deliver accurate measurement and reliable system operation.

PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Support selection and specification of flow computers, meters, pressure and temperature instruments, and data acquisition devices based on fluid properties, operating conditions, accuracy requirements, and client standards. Obtain vendor quotations as directed.
  • Configure and program flow computers, including meter runs, input scaling, calculation methods, base conditions, gas composition, meter factors, pulse scaling, alarms, totalizers, and reports, as applicable to the service.
  • Verify flow calculations and measurement parameters against approved project requirements and applicable American Gas Association (AGA) and American Petroleum Institute (API) measurement standards. Document calculation checks and configuration changes.
  • Integrate flow computers and meters with programmable logic controllers (PLCs), distributed control systems (DCS), supervisory control and data acquisition (SCADA) systems, and historians. Configure and troubleshoot serial and Ethernet communications, including Modbus RTU and TCP.
  • Develop human-machine interface (HMI) graphics for flow rates, totals, measurement status, alarms, and diagnostics. Verify displayed values, units, scaling, and data quality against source devices.
  • Prepare and execute factory and site acceptance tests, loop checks, and commissioning procedures. Verify analog and pulse inputs, totalization, communications, alarms, and measurement calculations using approved test methods.
  • Troubleshoot measurement discrepancies involving instrumentation, wiring, pulse signals, configuration, communications, and calculation inputs. Coordinate calibration, meter verification, and proving activities with client and vendor specialists, as required.
  • Configure and verify measurement archives, event logs, audit trails, time synchronization, and configuration backups. Maintain traceable records of testing and approved changes.
  • Review client documents, P&IDs, vendor drawings, and manuals. Prepare configuration records, communications maps, basic sketches, engineering calculations, test reports, and as-built documentation for engineering review.
  • Participate in client and internal meetings, shop visits, and site activities. Communicate technical issues clearly, monitor assigned schedules and budgets, and follow engineering checking and quality procedures.
  • Comply with company and client health, safety, security, and environmental requirements and applicable regulations. Participate in hazard identification programs and promptly report unsafe acts, conditions, and incidents.

Health, Safety, and Environmental Responsibilities:

  • All employees are responsible for supporting Audubon Companies’ Health, Safety, and Environmental (HSE) policies and procedures. This includes:
  • Performing duties in a manner that protects personal and team health and safety
  • Participating in required HSE training, meetings, and reporting activities
  • Identifying and reporting hazards, near misses, and unsafe conditions
  • Following safe work practices and complying with applicable regulatory requirements

EXPERIENCE AND SKILL REQUIREMENTS:

  • Bachelor of Science in Engineering or equivalent technical education and relevant experience.
  • 5–10 years of relevant experience in plant, refinery, pipeline, offshore oil and gas, or comparable industrial environments, including demonstrated hands-on flow measurement and flow computer experience.
  • Demonstrated ability to configure, test, troubleshoot, and commission at least one industrial flow computer platform. Candidates must be able to describe completed projects and their direct responsibility for measurement configuration and startup.[R1.1]
  • Working knowledge of gas and liquid measurement principles and the application of differential pressure, ultrasonic, turbine, and Coriolis meters. Understand how installation conditions, operating range, fluid properties, and instrument accuracy affect measurement performance.
  • Ability to configure and validate pressure and temperature compensation, gas compressibility, flowing versus base volumes, mass flow, pulse scaling, and totalization, as applicable. Understand the use of gas composition and heating value in energy measurement.
  • Practical experience applying relevant AGA and API Manual of Petroleum Measurement Standards (MPMS) requirements to assigned measurement systems, including calculation setup, electronic measurement records, and change control.
  • Ability to read P&IDs, instrument data sheets, loop and wiring diagrams, and communications maps; verify 4–20 mA and pulse signals; and diagnose Modbus addressing, data type, byte order, scaling, and communications issues.
  • Proficiency with flow computer configuration tools, basic control logic, HMI development, industrial networking, and Microsoft Office 365. Clear written and verbal English communication, organized documentation, and effective coordination with clients and project teams.

Preferred Experience

  • Experience with ABB Totalflow, Emerson FloBoss, OMNI flow computers, or Thermo Fisher Scientific AutoFLEX; familiarity with GF868 ultrasonic meters and NUFLO MC-III measurement devices is also valuable. Experience with every listed platform is not required.
  • Natural gas custody transfer or allocation measurement, metering stations, gas chromatograph integration, and measurement audit support. Liquid measurement, meter proving, and meter factor verification experience are additional advantages.
  • Application of AGA 3, 7, 8, 9, or 11 and relevant API MPMS chapters for the meter technology and service; experience with Kepware, Modscan, or comparable communications and diagnostic tools.
