Job Description

The Environmental Services (EVS) Specialist aids in maintaining a high-quality standard of housekeeping. This includes performing cleaning functions in assigned areas while following assigned schedules and specific methods to provide patients, visitors, and staff with a sanitary, orderly, and safe patient care environment. EVS Specialists aid in the prevention of cross contamination, controlling bacteria, odor, and sustaining acceptable aseptic conditions. They may assist with moves, recycling, delivery of supplies, and the removal of trash and biohazard waste. The EVS Specialist may use industrial cleaning equipment.

Job Duties

  • Interacts with co-workers, visitors, and other staff consistent with the values of Jefferson.(Do not delete, move or over-write this statement)
  • Establishes and maintains clean, sanitary, and safe environment in assigned work areas by following departmental policies and procedures (20%)
  • Proper disposal of biohazards according to EPA and OSHA codes and regulations. Handle thedisposal of environmental Contaminants such as: batteries, thermometers (mercury), and needles. Keep biohazard food and loading area safe and clean of debris. (20%)
  • Maintains equipment, clean carts, buckets, floor machines, other equipment, and supply closets to give the hospital a professional appearance. (20%)
  • Must comply with established personal protective equipment requirements necessary forprotection against exposure to blood and other potentially infectious body fluids, chemical disinfectants, radiation, and other hazardous substances. (5%)
  • Follows hospital/departmental policy on hand hygiene. (5%)
  • Completes and maintains all carpet and hard surface flooring in accordance with departmentalprocedures. (10%)
  • Observes safety precautions when pushing equipment. Reports faulty mechanical, structural orelectrical problem in accordance with safety policy creating an environment of safety (5%)
  • Utilizes wet floor signs to prevent slippage by patients, employees, and visitors in accordance withsafety policy. Performs duties in compliance with policy and safety practices. (5%)
  • Converses with patients and visitors using scripting to establish dialogue and extend every possiblecourtesy. Demonstrates high standards of conduct in the work environment to make Jefferson the choice for patients and employees. (5%)
  • Assist with the moving of furniture, equipment, supplies, recycling, and set-ups by request of thesupervisor and/or staff. (5%)
  • May use industrial cleaning equipment such as an extractor, bovac, buffer, roto, advance walkbehind auto-scrubber and/or burnisher for floor refinishing and maintenance.
  • Respond to pages or phone calls in a timely fashion.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.


Minimum Qualifications

  • Utilizes knowledge of patient safety and error prevention to impede the spread of infection and disease.
  • Knowledge of processes for providing a clean and bacterially safe environment for patients and facility staff.
  • Knowledge of practices and procedures involved in the task of responding to and cleaning potentially hazardous spills.
  • Knowledge of the processes, procedures and techniques involved in cleaning and preparing hospital rooms.
  • Knowledge and understanding of legislation and regulatory bodies affecting healthcare practices.
  • Knowledge of regulations and standards regarding the occupational safety and health of personnel working within an organization, ability to apply relevant regulations and standards to daily work activities.


Preferred Qualifications

  • High School Diploma/GED
  • Less than 1 year of experience in housekeeping or cleaning in a healthcare environment preferred but not required.

Physical Demands
Lift and carry 25 lbs. frequent sitting/standing, frequent keyboard use, *patient care providers may be required to perform activities specific to their role including kneeling, bending, squatting and performing CPR.
