Flood Risk Consultant
Tetra Tech is looking for a Flood Risk Assessor to lead flood risk assessment work that shapes planning, design and consenting outcomes across Ireland. We have opportunities available in Dublin, Cork and Galway.
Purpose & Scope of the Role
This is a senior role within the Flood Risk Assessment team, supporting a wide range of flood risk, drainage and water environment projects across Ireland. You will lead the preparation of flood risk assessments, EIA water chapters, hydraulic modelling reports and related technical deliverables that support planning, design and consenting. Working as part of a multidisciplinary team, you will help shape solutions that are technically robust, deliverable and aligned with project needs. You will also play an important part in strengthening the team through guidance, review and support for junior colleagues.
Your Impact in this position
You will contribute directly to high-quality project delivery, helping to improve the consistency, resilience and technical capability of the team. In the short term, you will add immediate value by progressing technical outputs and supporting senior colleagues. Longer term, you will have scope to broaden your consultancy experience, build client confidence and develop towards more senior engineering or Associate-level responsibility.
Flood Risk Assessment and Consenting Expertise
· You will bring strong practical experience in flood risk assessment, water environment assessment and Irish planning and consenting requirements. You will understand how flood risk affects development and infrastructure, and you will be confident preparing sound technical submissions for Local Authorities, the Office of Public Works and other authorities.
Hydrology, Hydraulic Modelling and Technical Analysis
· You will have solid experience in flood hydrology and hydraulic processes, with hands-on knowledge of open channel, surface water and floodplain modelling. Experience with Flood Modeller, TUFLOW, HEC-RAS, ICM InfoWorks or similar tools would be an advantage. Just as important is your ability to question assumptions, review outputs critically and ensure models are fit for purpose.
Technical Reporting and Clear Communication
· You will be an accomplished report writer who can translate complex analysis into clear, concise and persuasive technical documents. You will communicate effectively with clients, planners and consenting bodies, balancing technical rigour with clarity and practicality.
Integrated Design and Problem Solving
· You will work collaboratively with civil, environmental, structural and other technical disciplines to develop effective flood risk and drainage solutions. From river engineering and SuDS to nature-based and catchment-scale approaches, you will help shape outcomes that are proportionate, deliverable and aligned with project objectives.
Leadership, Mentoring and Project Delivery
· You will support junior staff and graduates through review, guidance and knowledge sharing. You will also contribute to project management in a consultancy environment, working to programme, budget and quality expectations while building trust with colleagues and clients.
Training, Qualifications & Experience
A degree in civil, water or environmental engineering, or a closely related discipline, is required. Chartered Engineer status, or active progression towards chartership, is strongly desirable. You will have at least five years’ experience in flood risk management. Membership of a professional body such as Engineers Ireland, CIWEM or ICE, and experience in GIS, EIA, SuDS or nature-based solutions, would be beneficial.
Working Environment
This role can be based from Dublin, Cork or Galway. Regular office attendance is expected to support collaboration, client engagement and team development, alongside project and site-related travel across Ireland as needed. A balanced hybrid approach is available, with remote and flexible working considered in line with business and project priorities.
