The Construction Inspector earns a competitive annual wage of $75,266.43-$95,964.70/based on experience and qualifications Additionally, the city pays all premiums for our employees' dental, long-term disability protection, and life insurance, plus the majority portion of the medical premium for employees and their dependents. A DAY IN THE LIFE OF A FLEET SUPERINTENDENT

Leads and manages the daily activities of the Fleet Division of the Engineering and Public Works Department. Ensures all work is conducted according to City and department policy, codes and standards of quality. The incumbent must be able to perform work within a broad framework of general policy, exercising broad judgment in defining work objectives and determining methods and systems to meet objectives. Supervises subordinates including mechanics and administrative personnel. Performs related work as required. Reports to the Deputy Director of Engineering and Public Works.

Essential Functions:

• Provides leadership to develop a culture of continuous improvement. Develops and manages the division budget. Sets high standards for customer service through timely and considerate delivery of services to clients and to vendors.
• Uses the City's fleet management software systems to manage and track fleet inventory, repair history, parts, fuel usage, etc.
• Refines the City's fleet management software system to develop a reliable fleet replacement program based on factors including, but not limited to, age, repair costs over time, appropriateness of use, etc.
• Directs and leads mechanics and shop foreman; supervisory duties include instructing; assigning, reviewing and planning work of others staff; maintaining standards; coordinating activities; allocating personnel; acting on employee problems; and recommending employee discipline as appropriate.
• Reviews work of subordinates for completeness, accuracy and adherence to policies and standards; evaluates performance and offers advice and assistance as needed.
• Develops and monitors division budget; solicits, recommend and manages contracts, manages the ordering of supplies, parts and equipment; ensures purchases do not exceed annual budget allocations. Attends City Council meetings as needed.
• Schedules current and long-range work projects for the division and ensures the good value through the allocation of equipment, materials and personnel to accomplish projects; estimates the cost of materials and labor for each project.
• Manages the City's Motor Pool Program and vehicle lifecycle and replacement plans
• Develops and implements program to ensure solid communications with clients about work status.
• Develops and implements program for implementation of a service loaner pool so that clients with vehicles downed for repairs will have alternate means of transportation.
• Manages the fleet maintenance shop, performing such duties as scheduling routine maintenance and major and minor repair work; obtaining price quotes for service and repair work; processing state vehicle inspections, etc.
• Inspects work in progress and at completion to ensure compliance with federal and state regulations, City ordinances, and safety rules and regulations.
• Oversees shop maintenance, and fuel system infrastructure maintenance.
• Familiar with heavy equipment, which may include grade-all, motor grader, backhoe, mowers, and dump truck; welding equipment, Jet Vac trucks, street sweeper, mechanic's tools, diagnostic instruments, hand and power tools, City vehicle, etc.
• Contributes to team effort by performing other related duties as assigned.
• Serves as "essential personnel"

Education, Experience, and Licenses:

• Requires a high school diploma or GED supplemented by vocational training in heavy equipment or automotive repairs, plus a minimum of five years of progressively responsible experience in fleet maintenance operations, or an equivalent combination of education, training and experience that provides the required knowledge, skills and abilities.
• Valid, Class "C" Texas Driver's License.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

• Thorough knowledge of fleet management software
• Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
• Thorough knowledge of the tools and materials used in fleet maintenance and repair projects.
• Considerable knowledge of light, medium, and heavy duty automotive mechanics.
• Thorough comprehension of national, state and local requirements for fuel management and distribution as associated with above and below ground fueling infrastructure.
• Ability to implement department and citywide operational and safety policies and procedures.
• Ability to schedule short- and long-range project plans to meet established goals.
• Ability to work under considerable stress as a result of tight deadlines, balancing multiple projects, dealing with City personnel, occupational hazards, etc.
• Ability to provide effective leadership and supervision and to evaluate the performance of subordinates.
• Ability to make sound, independent decisions and use judgment and discretion in applying City policies, rules and regulations.
• Ability to plan work and carry through to completion with minimal supervision.
• Ability to understand and follow complex oral and written instructions.
• Ability to prepare reports, records, forms, correspondence, etc., with completeness, accuracy and attention to detail.
