THE PUBLIC WORKS MAINTENANCE FLEET SECTION IS LOOKING TO HIRE A FLEET SUPERVISOR!

The Fleet Supervisor plans, organizes, and supervises maintenance activities for the City Fleet shop. This will include preventive maintenance and repair activities of municipal fleet equipment. May assist in the development of equipment specifications. Responsible for the safety program for Fleet Shop staff and the safety inspection of the City's equipment.

Examples of duties

  • Plans, prioritizes, assigns, supervises, and reviews the work of staff involved in fleet maintenance activities.
  • Supervise the City's equipment maintenance facilities and oversee preventative maintenance and repair activities for municipal equipment such as fire apparatus, medic units, police cars, large and small construction equipment and a wide range of other gasoline, diesel, and alternative fuel powered vehicles.
  • May conduct research on assigned topics, prepares and presents technical reports on operations and activities, may participate in capital development and improvement projects.
  • Recommends and assists in the implementation of goals and objectives; establishes schedules and methods for repair, maintenance, and operations; implements policies and procedures; may perform short- and long-term planning for Fleet operations.
  • Responsible for the selection, supervision, and evaluation of assigned staff; assigns work and ensures appropriate training is provided; investigates complaints; recommends and administers disciplinary actions; handles sensitive personnel matters and recommends grievance responses; exercises full supervision over employees.
  • Participates in the development of the Section work plan; assigns work activities, projects, and programs; monitors work flow; reviews and evaluates work products, methods, and procedures.
  • Recommends improvements and modifications as needed.
  • Participates in Section budget preparation and administration; prepares and administers assigned budget; prepares cost estimates for budget recommendations; submits justifications for equipment and supplies; monitors and controls expenditures.
  • Answers questions and provides information and/or written correspondence to customers; responsible for quality control and customer satisfaction. Initiates corrective action as necessary to resolve issues.
  • Coordinates Section activities with those of other sections, departments, and outside agencies; coordinates joint projects with others; may coordinate the work of contractors.
  • May provide cost estimates and billings for reimbursable work. Inspects the work of staff while in progress or for results desired; ensures that all necessary documentation is completed and processed accurately.
  • May prepare written bid specifications for new equipment and assist in evaluating bids submitted; may participate in the preparation of requests for proposal; may administer contracts, update specifications, maintain contact with vendors, and/or inspect work performed by contractors.
  • May requisition and purchase supplies, equipment and materials; review purchase orders.
  • Keeps abreast of new equipment, materials, and procedures in the area of municipal fleets.
  • May serve on-call evenings and weekends and respond to Public Works emergencies when called.
  • Ensures departmental adherence to safety standards and City policies; will conduct crew safety meetings and inspections.
  • May attend and serve on a variety of City committees, and task teams; participates in division staff meetings.
  • Helps foster and maintain an efficient and effective team environment.
  • Facilitates staff development on such issues as diversity and creating a respectful working environment.
  • Performs related duties as assigned.

Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications

Experience

Five years of increasingly responsible experience in field maintenance, fleet maintenance, and/or parks maintenance operations, including two years of supervisory responsibility or four years of responsible lead worker experience.

Education

Equivalent to an Associate's Degree from an accredited college or university in area(s) of responsibility or a closely related field.

Background

Must pass a background check.

License

  • Valid Oregon driver’s license (or, the ability to obtain by date of hire); must pass driving records check and, if hired, maintain a driving record that meets the City’s standard. Oregon law requires that an out-of-state license holder must obtain a valid Oregon license (with appropriate endorsements) within 30 days of becoming domiciled in the state (ORS 803.355).
  • May be required to possess a commercial driver's license (CDL).
  • May be required to possess other licenses as appropriate.

  • Sources of information related to public fleet management, including recent developments, current literature, expert consultants, and professional associations.
  • Business concepts, negotiating methods, budgeting procedures and techniques.
  • Modern office procedures and methods, including computer data entry and information management.

  • Principles and procedures of record keeping.
  • Continuous process improvement concepts and applications.

  • Interpret and apply Federal, State, and local policies, procedures, laws, and regulations.
  • Organize, direct, and implement maintenance program activities while creating and supporting a high value on customer service.
  • Establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with those contacted in the course of work.
  • Generate repair orders and enter daily time records for equipment service through computer entry.
  • Prepare and administer a budget.
  • Supervise, train, lead, motivate and evaluate assigned staff. In addition to building and creating a strong team environment and focus.

  • Prepare short and long-term planning for a variety of maintenance programs.

Supplemental information

Non-Represented Retirement Program

Upon eligibility, the City will contribute an employee contribution of 6%, as well as the employer contribution, to a retirement program administered by the Oregon Public Employees’ Retirement System (PERS). In addition, the City will pay a 3% contribution to a deferred compensation program if the employee contributes at least 1%.

From January 1, 2020, through December 31, 2034, most retirees may work for a PERS-participating employer for an unlimited number of hours while continuing to receive their pension benefit based on HB 2296.
