Senior Mechanic

JOB TITLE: Senior Mechanic

CLASSIFICATION : Non-Exempt

DEPARTMENT : Fleet Maintenance

SUPERVISOR: Mechanic Foreman & Fleet Manager

SALARY: $52,906 to $63,487 Annually

GENERAL JOB DESCRIPTION

Advise, perform, and participate in more complex and difficult work of staff responsible for mechanical repairs which include electrical, hydraulic, air systems, diesel and gasoline powered vehicles and equipment, and to perform more technical tasks relative to assigned areas of responsibility. Perform technical repairs on all city owned vehicles and equipment and to perform a variety of complex tasks relative to assigned areas of responsibility.

PRIMARY DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Diagnose problems and repair automotive, construction, electrical, hydraulic, air-conditioning, and other mechanical equipment.
  • Participate in the repair of mechanical defects in mechanical equipment involving all city owned vehicles and equipment.
  • Analyze failures; determine problems and causes; recommend solutions.
  • Respond to emergency situations and maintain accident and incident reports.
  • Perform general overhauling, engine rebuilding, and tune-ups involving gasoline and diesel-powered engines and the maintenance of automotive equipment including lubrication and general servicing.
  • Change and repair tires; perform safety inspections on vehicles; report safety and repair work activities; Inspect and diagnose mechanical defects and problems with all cities owned vehicles and equipment.
  • Replace worn parts; adjust and repair brakes and steering systems, transmissions, cooling systems, fuel systems, electrical systems, hydraulic systems, and drive-train mechanisms; diagnose electrical components, air systems and vehicle camera systems.
  • Perform arc and gas welding and fabrication services; perform the maintenance of small equipment.

SECONDARY DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Assist in the general maintenance and cleaning of shop area.
  • Estimate time, materials, and equipment required for jobs assigned; requisition materials as required.
  • Ensure the adherence to safe work practices and procedures.
  • May be required to be on call or work overtime on occasion.
  • Fuel, grease and lubricate all city owned vehicles and equipment and ensure proper fluid levels.
  • Perform other duties and responsibilities as required.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES

  • Knowledge of operational characteristics of automotive, construction, and small equipment tools and equipment.
  • Knowledge to repair of internal combustion and diesel engines. Ignition, brake, fuel, and cooling systems.
  • Knowledge of welding and related equipment.
  • Knowledge of automatic and manual transmission and general automotive repair theory of operation.
  • Knowledge of occupational hazards and standard safety practices.
  • Knowledge of steering mechanisms and front-end assemblies.
  • Knowledge to operate and repair a variety of automotive and construction equipment in a safe and effective manner.
  • Skills to perform major and minor tune-ups and automotive troubleshooting principles.
  • Skills to monitor and remedy unsafe conditions.
  • Ability to lead, organize, and review the work of other mechanics.
  • Ability to interpret, explain, and enforce department policies and procedures.
  • Ability to perform heavy manual labor.
  • Ability to work independently in the absence of supervision.
  • Ability to communicate clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships.

QUALIFICATIONS FOR THE JOB

Required:

High school diploma or GED with specialized training in the full mechanical repair of vehicles, construction equipment, and small equipment, including some experience in diesel and electrical repair.

Preferred

Three (3) years of increasingly responsible automotive and equipment mechanical experience. Class A CDL driver’s license to be obtained within one (1) year of employment.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job. While performing the duties of this job, the employee is required to maintain effective audio-visual discrimination and perception needed for making observations, communicating with others, reading, and writing. The employee is also required to maintain physical condition necessary for operating assigned equipment, walking, standing, kneeling, repeated bending or sitting for prolonged periods of time and lifting to 50 pounds. Maintain mental capacity which allows the capability of making sound decisions demonstrating intellectual capabilities.

Working Environment

Shop environment; exposure to noise, dust, grease, smoke, fumes, gases; work in confined spaces. Outside environment, working on equipment that breaks down in field. Operating equipment and working in Inclement weather conditions. Work irregular hours including assigned overtime, weekends, and holidays as needed. Be available to be contacted by phone in case of an emergency.
