Job Description

The Role:

Joining Moderna offers the unique opportunity to be part of a pioneering team that's revolutionizing medicine through mRNA technology, with a diverse pipeline of development programs across various diseases.

You'll be part of a continually growing organization, working alongside exceptional colleagues and strategic partners worldwide, contributing to global health initiatives.

Moderna's commitment to advancing the technological frontier of mRNA medicines ensures a challenging and rewarding career experience, with the potential to make a significant impact on patients' lives worldwide.

Moderna's mission is to establish a leading-edge research, development, and manufacturing facility at Harwell, as part of a long-term commitment to onshore mRNA vaccine production for respiratory diseases. This initiative will create a multitude of highly skilled jobs and foster collaboration with academic, NHS and government partners across the UK. We're looking for global experts eager to join us in this endeavour, contributing to a future where access to life-saving vaccines is a reality for all.

You’ll serve as a critical engineering owner for Moderna’s GMP manufacturing equipment, enabling operability and reliability across process platforms. Based in Harwell but focused on supporting Moderna’s Norwood (MA) manufacturing network, you’ll drive issue resolution, continuous improvement and operational readiness. This role is hands-on, cross-functional, and essential to the daily success of mRNA manufacturing.

You will collaborate closely with Equipment SMEs, MS&T, and Equipment End Users to deliver gold-standard batches and first-time-right processing. Candidates should thrive in a fast-paced, innovative biotech environment with strong technical ownership and accountability.

Here’s What You’ll Do:

Your key responsibilities will be:

  • Provide subject matter expertise and direct engineering support for critical GMP manufacturing equipment (e.g., Ultrafiltration, Chromatography, TMIX, Single Use Mixers, Buffer Prep Vessels, Fermenters, Reaction Vessels).
  • Serve as the Engineering Owner for process equipment used in Moderna's Norwood manufacturing facility.
  • Deliver day-to-day floor support, ensuring continued operation and uptime for complex systems in regulated environments.
  • Lead small-to-medium sized technical projects that balance quality, compliance, and timelines—ensuring no impact to production schedule.
  • Author high-quality technical documents in compliance with Moderna’s global quality systems.

Your responsibilities will also include:

  • Troubleshoot complex mechanical or process issues and implement robust resolutions including Corrective and Preventive Actions (CAPAs).
  • Manage change controls, deviations, and quality records related to assigned equipment.
  • Participate in facility fit and tech transfer activities for new projects and equipment platforms.
  • Contribute to continuous improvement and optimization of preventative maintenance strategies.
  • Support gold-standard batch outcomes and flawless tech transfer execution across projects.

The key Moderna Mindsets you’ll need to succeed in the role:

  • “We behave like owners. The solutions we’re building go beyond any job description.”
  • You’ll own your equipment systems fully—driving root cause, resolution, and continuous improvement with long-term operability in mind.
  • “We digitize everywhere possible using the power of code to maximize our impact on patients.”
  • You’ll support an ecosystem where engineering and data-driven monitoring intersect, and will have the opportunity to work with platforms increasingly supported by digital and AI-driven tools.

Here’s What You’ll Bring to the Table:

  • A bachelor’s degree in Chemical or Mechanical Engineering
  • Minimum of 4 years relevant Process Engineer-related experience
  • 2 years of experience in a GxP environment preferred
  • Experience with Bioprocess Equipment (Ultrafiltration, Chromatography, TMIX, Single Use Mixers, Buffer Prep Vessels, Temperature Control Units, Fermenters, Reaction Vessels, etc)
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills (verbal and written) are required. Expected to be able to present own work to peers and cross-functional managers and influence leadership decisions. Technical writing skills required.
  • Must be able use his/her technical background to investigate issues using a structured problem-solving approach to determine true root cause and develop effective corrective and preventative actions. Must be able to be able to find true root cause and path forward for complex problems.
  • Familiarity with Excel, Word, and PowerPoint are required, and basic statistical analysis techniques are preferred.
  • Ability to interact well with other groups and must be able to take ownership of and follow through on assignments. Must be able to drive results on multiple complex assignments simultaneously with minimal required direction from his/her supervisor.
  • Ability to represent Moderna’s interests, objectives and policies in a professional and responsible manner.

As part of Moderna’s commitment to workplace safety, this role may require an enhanced pre-employment check.
