Job Description

Are you a fitness professional who values building real relationships with your clients? The University of Maine at Farmington (UMF) Fitness and Recreation Center is looking for a Per Diem Fitness Instructor to join our team. This isn't just a gym; it's a space where students, staff, and Farmington neighbors come together to improve their lives.

In this role, you won't just be counting reps; you'll be a partner in our members' wellness journeys - helping students, faculty, and community members reach their goals through science-based programming and personalized coaching.

The rate of pay for this per diem position is $20/hr.

Key Responsibilities

  • Individualized Programming: Design and implement tailored fitness programs based on individual client goals, fitness levels, and health histories.
  • Client Assessments: Conduct comprehensive fitness assessments (including body composition, cardiovascular endurance, and movement screenings) to establish baselines and track progress.
  • Expert Instruction: Lead one-on-one or small-group personal training sessions, ensuring clients use proper form and equipment.
  • Education & Support: Empower clients by teaching safe exercise techniques and healthy lifestyle habits while maintaining a positive, encouraging training environment.
  • Safety & Professionalism: Ensure all activities are conducted within the professional scope of practice. Maintain a clean, organized, and safe environment for all members.

Required Skills & Core Competencies

  • Communication: Strong interpersonal skills with the ability to motivate a diverse population ranging from student-athletes to community seniors.
  • Reliability: As a per diem employee, the ability to manage your own schedule and maintain consistent communication with clients and management is essential.

Required Qualifications

  • Education: High School diploma or equivalent.
  • Certification: A current ACE Certified Personal Trainer (ACE-CPT) certification or another nationally accredited personal training certification (e.g. NASM, ACSM, NSCA).
  • Safety Credentials: Current CPR, AED, and First Aid certifications (must be maintained throughout employment)

Preferred Skills

  • Experience working in a collegiate or multi-generational fitness environment.
  • Knowledge of various training modalities (strength training, functional mobility, etc.).
  • Ability to adapt programming for clients with specific physical limitations or health considerations.
