As part of the surgical patient care team, the incumbent will report directly to the Site Lead, Clinical Nutrition and will work closely with the inter-professional team for the education and treatment of the patient. The incumbent will:

  • Develop and coordinate individual and group classes. Provide ongoing support for the patients in the area of wellness education.
  • Counsel patients on a one-to-one basis for the development of individual exercise programs, and will provide follow up for same.
  • Encourage and assist with any research pertaining to the program.
  • Plan and coordinate activities within the bariatric program with other team members.
  • Work within an inter-professional team in the developments and delivery of outreach programs related to Bariatric Care.
  • Ensure clients follow safe exercise practices by demonstrating proper use of equipment and exercise techniques.
  • Handle the analysis, problem-solving and on-going follow up for assigned client cases.
  • Council clients on fitness training and health and wellness management.
  • Support clients by tracking progress, follow-up on issues and working with inter-professional teams as required.
  • Design personalized and specialty exercise programs.
  • Design, promote and administer specialty programs, events and bariatric clinics.
  • Develop informational handouts and instructional materials.
  • Ensure client information is accurately documented updated and filed.
  • Provide other duties as assigned by the Manager, Health Services, as required.

Experience

  • Minimum three (3) years related experience working with bariatric clients in regard to lifestyle, wellness concepts, and practice pre and post operatively preferred.

Victoria General Hospital has a mandate to provide service in French; preference will be given to bilingual (French/English) candidates.

Education (Degree/Diploma/Certificate)

  • Completion of an undergraduate degree with specialization in the human performance sciences, with course work related to exercise physiology, anatomy, fitness principles and kinesiology.
  • Master's degree in a related discipline preferred.

Certification/Licensure/Registration

  • Canadian Society for Exercise Physiology (CSEP), Certified Personal Trainer (CPT) designation or Certified Exercise Physiologist (CEP) preferred.

Qualifications and Skills

  • Proven abilities in the development and implementation of exercise programs and educational workshops.
  • Strong customer service, communication, and interpersonal skills required.
  • Demonstrated analytical and problem-solving skills.
  • Strong presentation, facilitation and instruction skills.
  • Computer proficiency required including the use of Microsoft Office Applications.
  • Ability to perform the position on a regular basis.
