Full Time, Tuesday - Saturday 8:45am - 5:15pm

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • The Fitness & Wellness Specialist will ensure that fitness and wellness planning become a fully integrated part of patient care at Caron through interdepartmental communication, scheduling appointments, education and quality patient care.
  • Implements interventions for chronic pain patients as prescribed by Caron’s Medical Department.
  • Develops individual and group fitness plans to address Caron patients’ general physical fitness needs.
  • Integrates 12-Step language within the realm of individual and group fitness planning and activities.
  • The Fitness & Wellness Specialist will educate patients and staff of fitness and wellness modalities to be used in recovery through lectures, classes and fitness and wellness programs.
  • Documents individual progress notes, treatment plan updates and case consultations relating to all patient appointments. Maintains competency in relation to documentation standards as required by licensing and accreditation entities and Caron protocol.
  • The Fitness & Wellness Specialist will apply skills to emergency situations that could arise in one’s work area.
  • The Fitness & Wellness Specialist will develop an understanding and knowledge of the Caron organization’s operating policies/parameters that guide the organization’s “Mission Statement’ and “Core Values” through familiarity with applicable New Hire Training, handbooks related to Recreation Services, procedure manuals, and will have the ability to interpret and apply these methods and guidelines on a daily basis.
  • The Fitness & Wellness Specialist position may demand specialty job duties and responsibilities that have a direct therapeutic impact on patient care. These specialty job duties and responsibilities will be based on the staff’s qualifications and may include the following services: Yoga, Meditation, Personal Training, Fitness Plan Writing, Senior Wellness Activities, recreation therapy, group therapy.

  • Frequent standing and walking
  • Sitting for periods of time
  • Frequent lifting, pushing/pulling, reaching/stretching, bending/stooping, and repetitive motions
  • Must be able to lift at least 50 pounds
  • Must be able to use all exercise and physical fitness equipment in Caron’s Recreation Center
  • Demonstrable level of personal fitness is required including facilitation of and participation in physical activities such as hiking, biking, walking, belaying and other recreational activities
  • Ability to perform in extreme temperatures during off-campus trips, where applicable

EDUCATION / EXPERIENCE Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Recreation/Sports Management Services preferred, or related field or evidenced experience and certifications required.
  • Certified Fitness Trainer required. If not certified at time of hire, the expectation is to achieve this certification within 6 months of hire.
  • Specialized area of certification preferred, including yoga, strength and conditioning, corrective exercise, etc.
  • Minimum of 3 years’ experience in the areas of fitness and wellness field with a working understanding of the impact on a patient and their family systems preferred.
  • Experience working with chronic pain population preferred.
  • Must possess the ability to express ideas clearly in both verbal and written forms.
  • If in recovery, 2 years of continuous sobriety is preferred.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  • Ability to work effectively with individuals across all age groups.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of substance use disorder and/or work with individuals with chronic pain
  • Demonstrated knowledge of fitness, wellness and health industry trends and best practices
  • Ability to demonstrate competence in challenge-course technology. Training will be provided upon hire.
  • Knowledge of weight training, exercise science, overall health and wellness.
  • Valid unrestricted driver’s license.
  • Must be computer literate and able to work with Microsoft® applications and clinically relevant software programs.
  • Ability to develop structured fitness and wellness plans.
  • Outdoor skills including but not limited to hiking, biking, recreation therapy.
  • Exhibits understanding of proper safety precautions, procedures and use of equipment and the ability to recognize potential safety hazards and implement preventative measures.
