Summary

This employee will serve as manager of the Cheraw Fish Hatchery.

Job Duties Include:

  • Regulating and supervising all activities which pertain to the culture and harvest of fish at the Cheraw Fish Hatchery.
  • Implementing and carrying out all duties necessary to ensure that fish production meets the annual production goals assigned by the Hatchery Coordinator.
  • Coordinating manpower and equipment needs to ensure successful pond stocking, management, harvest, transportation and stocking of hatchery products to the state's public waters.
  • Supervising and/or conducting maintenance of grounds, ponds, office, work buildings, and personal residence and all other associated structures to ensure maximum service.
  • Being on-call 24 hours/day.
  • Administration of department records, fish production reports, feed usage reports, annual report, requisitions, field purchase request (FPR's), procurement cards, staff sick/annual leave reports, and development of hatchery information for public use.
  • Supervising hatchery employees at the Cheraw Fish Hatchery on a daily basis.
  • At the Hatchery Coordinator's request, provide assistance with maintenance and construction activities on State Lakes maintenance projects, other State hatcheries, regional and research projects, and coordinating outreach activities including organizing fisheries-related events, stocking and hauling for DNR partners, and meeting with groups to promote SCDNR and the fish hatchery program.

Examples of duties

A master's degree in biology, chemistry or wildlife management and two (2) years of experience in fish, wildlife or marine management or research programs; or a bachelor's degree in biology, chemistry, wildlife management or related technical area and four (4) years of experience in fish, wildlife or marine management or research programs.

Qualifications

Knowledge of warmwater fish culture techniques and nutrition; genetics and methodology of fish brood-stock enhancement; identification and treatment of common warmwater fish diseases and parasites; maintenance of grounds, buildings, equipment, ponds, and dams; theory and principles of fisheries biology; and supervisory methods and techniques. Previous black bass (Micropterus spp.) culture experience preferred. Familiarity with personal computers and mobile devices; proficiency with Microsoft Office products and GIS online. Must be able to collect, enter, and manage data reliably, track and manage budgets, and formulate work-plans to achieve project goals. Ability to work outdoors in adverse weather and lift 50 Ibs without assistance. Must be willing to live on-site in SCDNR-provided residence.
