The Peter W. Pfeiffer Fish Hatchery in Franklin County is looking for a motivated Fish and Wildlife Management Foreman!

This 114-acre facility includes 48 production ponds (50 acres of water) where we culture a wide variety of species including channel catfish, blue catfish, bluegill, redear sunfish, largemouth bass, sauger, saugeye, muskellunge, fathead minnows, and lake sturgeon.

As a Fish and Wildlife Management Foreman, you’ll be directly involved in fish spawning and pond culture, helping to support important fisheries management efforts across the state. The work is hands-on, often outdoors in all kinds of weather, and follows the seasonal cycles of fish culture—so no two days are alike!

This position will be the lead for building and ground maintenance and technical fish culture activities at Peter W. Pfeiffer Fish Hatchery. Duties will include training staff proper fish culture techniques, safe use of equipment and assisting with all operations at a fish hatchery.

Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

• Schedules, performs, arranges and has complete responsibility for maintenance and performance of technical equipment utilized in building maintenance, and fish culture activities. Performs and/or coordinates the design and construction of equipment critical to fish culture activities.
• Performs fish culture activities such as sample seining, harvesting, summarizing harvest data, and applying chemicals and fertilizers to ponds. Assists with spawning fish, caring for eggs, and fry enumeration.
• Supervises fish and wildlife technicians and trains them in all aspects of safe and proper equipment use for building maintenance, grounds maintenance, and fish culture activities.
• Independently drives large fish transportation vehicles and stocks fish into public lakes, streams, and tailwaters at the appropriate stocking site and maintains fish health during transport.
• Follows state and KDFWR policies and procedures in the purchasing of supplies and equipment as needed or directed. Completes daily activity sheets, stocking cards, and maintain equipment maintenance records.
• Assists other fisheries staff with fish acquisition for broodstock and population studies and with fish habitat improvement work.

Special Requirements: Class B CDL with Tanker endorsement will be required to perform job duties.

Minimum Requirements

EDUCATION: Graduate of a college or university with a bachelor's degree in a biological, natural, agricultural, or aquacultural sciences.

EXPERIENCE, TRAINING, OR SKILLS: Must have one year of experience in wildlife and/or fisheries conservation or related field.

Substitute EDUCATION for EXPERIENCE: A master's degree in a biological, natural, agricultural, or aquacultural science will substitute for the required experience.

Substitute EXPERIENCE for EDUCATION: Experience in wildlife and/or fisheries conservation or related field will substitute for the required education on a year-for-year basis.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS (AGE, LICENSURE, REGULATION, ETC.): Must possess a valid driver's license prior to appointment in this classification. Must be (and remain) eligible to hold a Commercial Driver's License when required by agency. Must maintain any required licensure (s), certification(s), or other credentials for the length of employment in this classification. Employing agency is responsible for ensuring employee possesses and maintains required licensure(s), certification(s) or other credentials.

Working Conditions

Must be able to work outside in temperature extremes for long periods of time and traverse rough terrain. Must be able to swim.

Probationary Period

This job has an initial and promotional probationary period of 6 months, except as provided in KRS 18A.111.
